Millions of Apple TV users and this is update? New icons and same stone age grid view?

Are you serious? How can this be 'SO UGLY' compared to what it was? It barely changed! You can almost see the glass effect. Flat is the new black everywhere, get over it!

When I signed into my iCloud account on the new Apple TV beta, my Mac (latest OS X Yosemite beta) told me my Apple TV now was using my Apple ID and phone number. Just a heads up.

They should learn a thing or two from Roku

I have an Apple TV in one room and, owing to the lack of any updates, decided to buy a Roku 3 for another room. Oh boy, does the Roku 3 kick ass?! Apple TV should learn a thing for two from Roku in terms of interface. Another big advantage I get from Roku 3: Amazon Video / Prime Video.

Can someone tell the writer of this article that this is not a "redesigned interface?"

Thats like me saying I remodeled my house because I painted.

Amazon Prime is the only reason I haven't transitioned from Roku 3 to Apple TV.

I understand they're content competitors but it would still be nice.

If you have an iOS device you can airplay from the Amazon Instant app to the Apple TV.

You guys all realize a totally new UI, App Store, gaming CANNOT happen in the current hardware, right?

Updated icons and new channels is all the current model is going to get. Save your complaints for if/when a new Apple TV is released.

I'm pretty sure the Apple TV runs full iOS inside an app, of course it can be redesigned. Storage could be an issue with an AppStore though.

...but iOS 6-style reflections, apparently.

It is a beta.

Your point? Apple waged war on iOS 6 and almost 14 months after the iOS 7 Beta 1 release this is the best they can do? I don't see how these are "iOS 7 Style Icons" with the lighting effect and a strip of film to indicate movies. With that said, they may still change, but why not change them when they were completely redone for this beta?

And about that Movie icon, maybe the clapboard is even less of a reference than a strip of film. Take the words out and which one would you click to watch a movie? If it doesn't change (to me) it's an admission that their design on iDevices isn't the innovation they thought it would be. Hopefully they don't make Apple TV the "OS you have to read" like they did with iDevices because I need my glasses to read Apple TV. ;)

Look at that Movies icon!

I used to look up to Apple's design talent, but almost every icon I've seen out of them since iOS 7 has been really disappointing.

And I know there are going to be people who say, 'they're just icons!', but we see them quite a bit. I don't want to feel like I could've done a better job than Apple. It just looks like they don't care enough about how this stuff looks anymore.
Aren't we being dramatic.

CANNOT? Why not?

No storage should be no problem. :apple:TV streams everything from content stored elsewhere (on a computer). Apps run one at a time. That big hard drive in that computer (elsewhere) could hold a ton of apps. When :apple:TV needed to run one, it could stream it over and run it. When it needed to run another, it could stream it over and run it.

We keep thinking that an :apple:TV is like the other iDevices. But it isn't. It's big storage is OUTSIDE its box. Since it's stationary, it's always connected to that big storage. As such, it has more on-demand storage than all other iDevices combined.

Because CREATIVE is better. When your wonderful, new, look can be drawn by a six-year old with a box of Crayons I'd say you're not earning your pay.

So 3D and faux glass is more creative? Seems to me this update is not Apple's grand vision for ATV (that would certainly be announced at a keynote). It's just an update to the interface to get rid of the old design language. Assuming Apple is working on something much bigger it doesn't make much sense to spend a lot of time redesigning the current interface outside of bringing it in line with current iOS design language.

Because glossy is so much better?

Yeah, and so is having decent color combinations. That Music icon gradient is the worst, and the one for TV Shows is the runner up.

Why not? It's all software. I'm definitely not installing this update when it comes out unless it actually has new features in addition to meaningless icon changes.

The only recent Apple TV update I've ever found useful, in fact, was the one that added ESPN. The rest have done nothing but reset my HDMI color output mode to something my TV could not display… oh yeah and add stuff I don't want like Disney XD.

Cannot because the hardware is only designed to run the current OS with updates. It's like trying to run mavericks on a PPC Mac.

A totally new UI/features will need new hardware and not just software to run it. The A5 chip is really out of date right now.

How is the A5 chip really out of date right now? What I've read says absolutely nothing uses the A7 to it's full potential yet, so I wouldn't say the A5 is really out of date. You're welcome to say that the older iOS devices are holding back the A7's potential, and soon to be A8's.

Folders Please!

The ATV interface absolutely requires folder capability. As additional icons are added, it becomes increasingly more difficult to find what you're looking for. We love ATV and have one for each TV we have. Hopefully, there'll be new hardware soon!

I didn't know that, and that's very cool. It would be awesome if they added dvr functionality that was stored in icloud in this way. I would like the next hardware revision to have 4K and 3D support; why have Apple seemingly ignored 3D? I get it's gimmicky and all but I think the A5 is more than capable of running it. I could be wrong though.

So it joins the rest of Apple's products in the uglification and hard to read trend. Yay.
