It's quite a delicate show with loads of subtle British humour and quirks. It is gentle, similar in style to The Detectorists. The description gives a general premise but does not do it justice.

It's entirely subjective, of course.
It's a show about a man in late middle age processing the disappearance of his partner via supernatural means. It's quiet, gentle, eccentric and very funny. It's got Michael Palin in it. It's a good match for AppleTV.
If you like action, and explosions, and people getting shot, then it's probably not for you. But you might be surprised.
Does Tehran not count? Is it because it’s not entirely in English? Or perhaps because Apple just has distribution international rights outside of Israel and does not own the series?
Apple would be a great home for this. And, apart from finishing the story arc of the books, there could be so much more mileage to be had from the Expanse universe. I’d want to see it all done well of course, and Apple does have an impressive sci fi track record, but I’d love to see spin offs filling in some of the back story prior to book one.
Top of my wish list would be a series (or more) about Mars as it becomes self sufficient and ultimately independent of Earth and another series (or more) covering Belter early history as it establishes various asteroid settlements. I’m sure that creators more imaginative than me could come up with much more besides.
Apple already has some experience with two shows exploring two sides of the same story, For All Mankind and Star City, and while it’s still early days for Star City I’d call it a success so far.

You asked for horror that wasn't "plain vanilla"; then they gave you a show that clearly wasn't plain vanilla, and also got critical raves-- and it was just "ok". 🙄

Whilst never officially connected in any way there are many, including me who would say For All Mankind is a prequel to The Expanse in all but name.
It's possible Apple could get the blessing of the authors (and both shows are showran by Ronald D. Moore) and actually make it one.
For All Mankind finishes and then a few months later Apple drops the first 6 seasons of The Expanse. Whole story, one channel. They then spend the big bucks getting the cast on board and make the final 3 seasons.

I understand that people are different, but I don't understand how anyone can enjoy shows like For All Mankind or Star City, because they are basically House of Cards in Space and with not that much space even.
It’s a great show and one that a description can’t do it justice, it’s just one of those ‘cozy’ shows bbc does so well. Mildly amusing that of all the shows Apple could have bought they go for this weird quirky show.
I would say for anyone to go in blind and just enjoy it. Spoiling any of it beforehand would ruin it.

I suppose taken in a realistic fashion, space is actually pretty empty and pretty boring. I mean Red Dwarf is just The Odd Couple in space but it works on so many levels.

Personally, I think space being so big and so empty is the reason it's so fascinating.
But yeah, there's no story to space, in that for a story you need to have plots and characters, you need interaction. Space is big, we are small. But stories need to focus mostly on the small to be relatable and comprehensible.
I am definitely one of those "many" and have been for a while. Add a few more (in fairness, probably quite a few more) series of For All Mankind and you could most definitely end up right at the start of Series 1 Episode 1 of The Expanse. I'd forgotten that and my dream of some Expanse back stories could most definitely be seen as bridging that gap (joining the dots).
The only somewhat physics-defying(*) hurdle that you'd have to jump over on the way is the invention of the Epstein Drive but apart from that, and The Expanse then bringing in the Protomolecule, both are essentially grounded in technologies that can realistically be extrapolated from what we have today.
(*) Or at least our current understanding of physics.
I believe in the backstory of the show the invention was Martian. It also might need a better name now!
I can't believe someone watches appleTV. it's like eating plane stale rice every day for breakfast and dinner and call it yummy.

FAM lost me mid way though season 2. Shame as the first season was really strong.
