Amazon has announced that Apple TV+ will be available as an add-on subscription through Prime Video in the United States later this month. Prime members will be able to subscribe to Apple TV+ for $9.99 per month directly within the Prime Video app.

The partnership potentially allows Apple's streaming service to reach a wider audience through Amazon's popular Prime Video platform, thereby avoiding the need to download additional apps or navigate separate billing systems. Subscribers will have access to Apple TV+'s full catalog of original content, including hit shows like "Severance," "Ted Lasso," and "The Morning Show," as well as films and live sports events.

Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, described the move as part of Amazon's strategy to expand Prime Video's offerings and allow customers to "personalize their streaming experience within a single app." Apple's senior VP of services Eddy Cue was also quoted in Amazon's press release:
"We want to make Apple TV+ and its award-winning library of series and films from the world's greatest storytellers available to as many viewers as possible. We're thrilled that Prime Video will now offer Apple TV+, giving viewers an incredible breadth of viewing options."
The arrangement mirrors Apple's own strategy of offering third-party video subscriptions through its Apple TV Channels feature, though Prime Video is not currently available as an Apple TV Channel.

While Apple TV+ is already accessible on various platforms, including smart TVs and streaming devices, this partnership may simplify the subscription process for Prime Video users who were previously unfamiliar with how to access Apple TV+.

The companies have not disclosed specific details about their business arrangement, but it's clearly mutually beneficial. Apple gains increased visibility and potential subscriber growth, while Amazon enhances its content offerings within the Prime Video ecosystem.

Discovery is getting ever more difficult. Different shows on different channels, each channel is available as an app on a TV, as an app on a set-top box, as an app on a stick, as a channel within another app, as a website. Does anyone know if the subscriptions and log-ins are shared, or do we need to remember in which location we subscribed to which channel?

And I assume the search function will work on all differently - does a search on the Amazon app result in TV+ shows only if I am subscribed in the TV+ channel on Amazon?

Does the Apple TV search result in hits on shows only Amazon Prime?

And I'm sure they're happily paying Amazon 30% commission? After all, that's how much distribution and access to "their" customers is worth, right Apple?

Excatly. They are happy to pay 30% because it's their platform. They developed it, they created the devices that allows companies to exist off the back of it.

I know I am happy to pay my dues to Apple for my apps I make and sell, because I wouldn't have a business if it wasn't for their platform and APIs. In the bad old days I would have been very, very lucky to take home 30% before tax, with DVD manufacturing, Storage, shipment, distribution. Hell the physical shop took 40-50% straight off.

I feel people just don't get that at all. And the open source evangelists... don't they have a home and family to pay for? Actually probably not, they are either multi-millionaires from way back or live in their mom's basement.

This feels sloppy strategically and un-Apple to me. The very limited exposure this gives them doesn’t make up for the loss of control over distribution and degradation of brand.

I hope there’s some other undisclosed part of the deal. Prime Video being an Apple TV Channel would be a start. Maybe something to do with NFL or MGM content? Or something else entirely—even from another arm of AMZN’s business?

Makes sense, with Prime Video similarly syncing with the Apple TV app, like all other streaming apps seem to.

Is anyone actually paying for Apple TV+? I feel like there is a voucher for X months for free all the time. Just yesterday I bought a AppStore gift card of 25 bucks on Amazon and when I applied the voucher on the AppStore on my iPhone, they also offered me 3 months of free TV+ in a pop up.
I have TV+ for free with my university subscription to music

Subscriptions and logins are not shared, like every other service that operates as a Prime Video channel.

It seems only us mugs that have an Apple One subscription, everyone else seems to constantly get atv+ for free.

Exactly. And the apps all suck in subtly different ways.

Interesting. I wonder if this means they are going end support of their native Apple TV app on platforms. The Prime Video app is already in more places than the Apple TV app. They would probably save some amount of dev costs.

If Apple wants TV+ to succeed, they need to dump money in to licensing other studios content. Netflix got to where it is because it had stuff from everywhere.

Streaming is too fragmented right now, shows cost too much to develop, and subs are way over priced to make up the numbers difference.

We only sub to one service at a time, which is a hassle to keep track of, but we can’t afford 6+ streamers at $10+ each month.

Honestly, the streaming wars have had a positive effect on my family… We don’t watch as much TV and the FOMO of missing some new content is withering. It’s just too hard to bother with.

No, I'm sure that a small mom & pop, customer-focussed startup like Amazon (who can only afford one private space program, the poor souls) have just let Apple walk all over them.

I think it's really important to defend these small struggling firms - who have done so much to uphold the principles of fair competition and support small sellers on their marketpaces - from the crushing power of Apple. Today it is Amazon - tomorrow, they could be coming for Google, Facebook or other champions of a level playng field...

Seriously, no, I'm sure they won't be paying 30%, but they will have hammered out an equitable and mutually beneficial deal (from Amazon and Apple's position) which is what happens when two businesses each have something the other wants.
