I would've never paid $9.99 for Apple TV+. Apple One makes Apple TV about $4 per month, which I think is more reasonable.

Only reasonable if you're also using the other services...which I am not.

It’s additional advertising in Prime for Apple TV titles, and Prime Video searches will turn up Apple TV titles. Even if customers then use Apple TV+, it’s still a win.

I hope there’s some other undisclosed part of the deal. Prime Video being an Apple TV Channel would be a start. Maybe something to do with NFL or MGM content? Or something else entirely—even from another arm of AMZN’s business?

Apple TV+ is a subscription service which you want as much as subscribers as possible. Why would Apple want limited exposure to Apple TV+?

This is the same idea why Apple Music is available on Android and Windows… Or iTunes were available on Windows to sync with iPods.

If there is a day where Apple starts to monetizing iOS (not from hardware sales, but from iOS as services) I am sure Apple will expand iOS to other hardware manufacturers.

I know I am happy to pay my dues to Apple for my apps I make and sell, because I wouldn't have a business if it wasn't for their platform and APIs. In the bad old days I would have been very, very lucky to take home 30% before tax, with DVD manufacturing, Storage, shipment, distribution. Hell the physical shop took 40-50% straight off.

It's good to hear a developers viewpoint. Apple has significantly reduced the up front costs of getting software to market and thus the risk. There are no discs to buy, duplicate, manuals to print, etc. and pay for before you sell the first one; and as you point out even when you sold one you were lucky to see 30% of the selling price.

Apple's 30% or 15% is a pretty good deal when you consider what it used to cost. I suspect small developers, when Apple opens up iOS more, will be hard pressed to go it alone and keep their costs below 15%; let alone reach a customer base as large and lucrative as in the App Store.

I feel people just don't get that at all.

They don't, and somehow think Apple's cut is an "Apple Tax." They also don't get that developers decide how much tehy want to make off an app and price accordingly. The real challenge, as I see it, is mobile app developers have conditioned customers to expect apps to be cheap, such as around 1$/Euro or free; thus making app sales a numbers game.

Seriously, no, I'm sure they won't be paying 30%, but they will have hammered out an equitable and mutually beneficial deal (from Amazon and Apple's position) which is what happens when two businesses each have something the other wants.

I'm sure there will be some favorable terms for both parties; I could see Amazon offering some titles as part of a Prime subscription in return for giving Apple a smaller cut of subscription revenue.

Excatly. They are happy to pay 30% because it's their platform. They developed it, they created the devices that allows companies to exist off the back of it.

The thing is, as tent-pole shows are concerned, Rings of Power draws a lot more viewers than Foundation or Severance.

Deserved or not, that is true for all streaming services. Apple’s only draw is Ted Lasso.

To be honest, we had another 6 months of free ATV+ and I usually skipped or should have skipped the first two episodes of any series because the third episode is usually the one in which they catch up to the description of the show. So much filler, it’s like they don’t dare start the story right away, they first need to get a shower, eat breakfast, read the paper, wait for the bus, talk to some colleagues and then remember that they needed to start something today. Two episodes of that.

Apple TV+’s problem is the same as Apple’s problem with gaming: they refuse to become a full-fledged studio. One of the best things they could have done was bought a studio such as Paramount. This would have given them an instant library along with a number of popular IPs they could use. But they don’t seem to want to go “all-in” on being a studio, so they continue to put out content that no one has heard of and never gets great viewing numbers except for a couple relatively minor hits. Just like with games Apple refuses to take that deep dive and will always be an also-ran in this space.

Or they could do it because it makes things better for their customers at no cost to them while also having people use their ecosystem more. Something Apple can't fathom at this point.

Of course Apple is paying Amazon for the right to distribute their content on Amazon's platform. That's how business works.

I don’t think people had an issue with paying Apple to distribute on the Apple Store. The issue was that you could only distribute iPhone apps in that way, and outside of Europe it still works that way. For now.
