Interesting, I thought it was happening for all MPEGs but you may indeed be correct there.

Edit: Nope, I just converted an MPEG-1, and lost the sound.

I'm wrong.

Just imported an mpeg-1 video into iTunes then converted it and lost the sound.

I figured it out.

Follow these simple steps :

Open the mpeg-1 movie with Quicktime
Export it as Movie to hinted movie.
Select options and then make movie self contained and mpeg muxed.
It winds up a QT movie of the same size and is converted pretty fast.

Hmm. I've used just to see if it works a few times, but only on my PC since that's where my iTunes library still lives. I know I've used it for MJPEG AVIs from my Canon S45 and not lost sound.

I'm off to experiment.

EDIT: I tested it out on both the PC and the iMac and it worked fine in both cases. Even QT Pro converted fine in Export to iPod. One reason I didn't convert all the files was that the bitrate only went down from 1Mbps to ~830 Mbps so it didn't save much disc space....

EDIT2: The file I tested was actually

Sorenson Video™ Decompressor, 320 x 240, Millions
QDesign Music 2, Mono, 22.050 kHz

EDIT3: An MPEG1 (Muxed) file did what y'all said. Audio is stripped.

I am lost badly

i am lost in the whole apple tv thingy. If you are serious enough about apple to buy this surely you will have an iPod so why not buy the correct dock and cables to play your iTunes and therefore iPod content. I understand there are a few people with a huge amount of data on iTunes but there is far cheaper ways to get music from your computer onto your tv.

Hi Guys, thanks for joining in.

Im gonna repond to some posts.

Nermal: isnt film at 24FPS? TV is 29FPS. can someone confirm this?

macjakob: 720p is not DVD res. DVD's are 480P.

just for reference, most DVD films are 720x480 at 24FPS. this could be a serious deal breaker for the atv. Im considering canceling my pre-order and going with a mac mini. I was holding off on this until the atv came out.

if this is true, its interesting how the MPAA may have pressured apple to not support standard DVD rips. only the itunes res films. genius bastards.

Not all DVDs are 24Fps :) It depends whether the DVD footage is interlaced or progressive :)
