So. the whole reason i bought an apple TV (the new model - 4, i believe) was to look at videos and photos i have taken with my phone and ipad on my TV,

I wanted to do this from iCloud, and the guy in the store assured me that if i logged my apple TV into my iCloud acct, I would be able to view all of the videos and photos i have uploaded to iCloud.

but now, it seems this is not possible.

the only thing from icloud that's available is the last 300 or so photos.., and no videos - that is whatever is in the photo stream.., which used to be 1000 photos, but now seems to be about 300 photos. because videos are not part of photo stream, no icloud videos are available to apple tv.

do i have this right?

You can AirPlay them all easily from your iPad or iPhone... That's the best way right now that I have found. Also, you could set up Albums and then share all your albums with just yourself. Then they would all show up in your shared albums.

finding airplay to be very buggy - sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't and my iphone/ipad freezes

one reason i wan to play videos from icloud is that my phone is a 4s and it doesn't have 5g wifi, so the wifi connection is too slow to use airplay.

videos play ok from my ipad with 5g wifi, but from my phone, they buffer for a long time

I agree that this is one of the biggest oversights of the Apple TV. Not sure how they didn't think people would want access to their photos...for now the workarounds described above are the best you can do.

iCloud is a mess. I finally made a smart album that I shared with myself to contain most of my pictures that I want on my screen saver, but it took a week for the changes to show up on the ATV. Now, even though they are there, it seems to have the same issue that the ATV screensaver has always had in that it picks a small subset of your pictures to use as the slideshow, and then recycles those pictures basically forever unless you force it to manually re-set at which point it may update the pictures with another small selection.

Further my wife and I are part of a home sharing group but there is no way to automatically have a shared album where we both have access to each other's pictures. It's ridiculous.
