With apple tv can i use it to record tv shows i watch on my tv?

No. Its a bridge between iTunes and your TV. i.e. films, music, tv shows etc in your iTunes library are streamed to the AppleTV which then displays them on your TV.

Its like an iPod with a TV for a screen. ;)
