The first tvOS 16.2 beta seeded to developers this week enables Siri voice recognition on the Apple TV for a more personalized experience.

The new feature allows Siri to recognize your voice and switch to your Apple TV user profile, play your music, and provide personalized recommendations for videos, with support for up to six family members, according to Apple. The feature will be available for all users when tvOS 16.2 is released later this year — likely in December.

As noted by Screen Times editor-in-chief Sigmund Judge, it is possible to associate your Siri voice profile from your iPhone or iPad with your Apple TV. Judge shared a preview of the feature on Twitter, but it is not fully functional yet in the beta.

Apple released tvOS 16.1 earlier this week with a new compact Siri interface and added support for "Hey Siri" voice commands via AirPods on the Apple TV.

The Apple TV 4K received a spec bump last week, with new features including an A15 Bionic chip, HDR10+ video support in compatible apps, up to 128GB of storage, a Siri Remote with a USB-C port for charging, a thinner and lighter design without an internal fan, and more. Pricing now starts at a lower $129 to $149 depending on the configuration.

I thought one of the few new features to TV was going to be to link viewing profiles in video apps to your Apple ID so it would automatically choose the right one. Did I misunderstand or was this quietly dropped or what?

That’s my biggest issue with AppleTV. I hope this comes.

Yeah, well maybe if they made Siri actually available in more than a couple regions, this would mean something. Every device but the Atv has Siri practically everywhere, WTH Apple?

Siri shows a bit more details when I ask it for Time. But still with tvOS it limits you what you can ask. If you're watching something on a video Siri can't search the web for your answer like iPadOS. Seems they need to come up with something to yield more information for consumers as a substitute to a browser.

Well that's cool.
I SWEAR Siri used to already do this several years ago on our phones.
My partner and I even tested it multiple times.
We'd each say "hey Siri" and our corresponding phones would always respond.
But then, something happened after the launch of the iphone Xs. Whenever we'd call out "hey Siri" it was always a crapshoot of who's phone or ipad would respond to who! Pretty annoying now to lose that capability.

Do I still need an iPhone or iPad for personal requests to function? If the answer is yes, this feature is worthless. I refuse to buy my kids an idevice so that Siri can still not know what’s going on.

Does Siri voice recognition exist on other products? Like the HomePod?
Yes, but it doing what you ask it is a different story. If you ask for a show and it gives options, can you say something like first second third. It's so annoying when I said the title word for word and she gives options. And 50/50 she will play it if I repeat again word for word. Other times she will keep saying there are options, then I'll curse at her, then she says she won't respond to that. At least that makes me laugh so I'm not as frustrated

I have zero use for Siri on ATV. She’s only available in Dutch in my region and doesn’t understand song, movie or show titles.

And user profiles don’t support third party video apps so that’s also pointless.

Use it for time, and local temp, sometimes you want that when watching.

Would like to see this alongside a Touch ID sensor on the home button of an upgraded remote control…

Got an analog clock on the wall in the same room, as well as a visible temp, humidity, and barometer next to that. Even all of those are far superior to any AI voice assistant, including Siri.

On the ATV, I gave up trying since every time I asked her to play a specific show ("Watch Stranger Things on Netflix/Watch Star Trek:The Next Generation") it never continued where I was from the season I was on. It ALWAYS started Season 1 episode 1. Every. Time.

But still there’s no way to see iCloud photos from other users in the AppleTV. It’s not really clear how multiple users work on the ATV..

It will if, for example, you say "cancel".
This just is not that hard...

I mean if I bump the button or it is hit in a pocket or a kid hits it. Not me intentionally holding it down. If you tap the button the prompt stays on the screen. It never diappears even after a minute. It wouldn’t be “that hard” for the prompt to time out after a tap and no further input for like fifteen seconds.

I guess I’m the only one this happens to.
