No way to control the apps without an iPhone or IPad...which is what AirPlay does. I really don't see the point here. Improve the AirPlay to full HD seems more useful than trying to put apps solely on the ATV. They would also need to put more storage back on the ATV, don't see this happening with the current hardware.

Having to control the apps with a touchscreen to begin with makes this more of a fun hack than an actual useful feature. What's the point of displaying apps on a TV when I need to stare at the controller because of lack of tactile feedback ?

This is good for things which don't require much user interaction, like music/sound/video streaming applications, but for games and such...

This might just convince me to part with my ATV 1 and buy an ATV 2!! Airplay almost had me, but this is the clincher...!

Hopefully this will force Apple to release a similar ability in the coming year. It would make the Apple TV skyrocket in terms of sales.

So the PS3 and Wii require touchscreens for games?

Care to explain how exactly the controller for the AppleTCV is specified?:rolleyes:

Nope - remote doesn't count. Go for two analog sticks, one D-Pad, 4 shoulder buttons and 4 hardware buttons, then we're talking.

Actually - did you ever touch one of these controllers? (arguing from the POV that I still don't feel comfortable on the PS3 controller because I am so used to my 360 controller).

I still don't understand how you control it? Is he using a cursor? Are their indicators? Or do you just tap the trackpad and hope for the best?

AppleTV - a trojan horse. Apple's game console, controlled with your portable iOS device.

I want to see iApps hacked to run on MACINTOSHES !!

Pushing Apple

I hope this pushes Apples to do something beyond a media interface on the Apple TV. The slow pace has been a disappointment since the ATV2 was released. I do enjoy iCloud for TV shows and music now though (don't have to have computer running itunes to watch purchased TV or listen to iCloud music anymore).

The only apps I really want on my AppleTV are "channel" apps such as the ABC or NBC app.

Well that isn't entirely true. I also want a XBMC type interface (or any) for local SMB shares but we all know that isn't going to happen.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I still prefer to use $99 in something else.
I do prefer that they offer a Mac App to run iOS Apps.
There are things like this already out there:
http://www.roku.com/roku-products
They of course are missing a lot of things but are well aimed to many TV owners that want something more.
The newest TV set already have many Internet streaming services and interesting integration with other products, however they always miss the seamless user interface and require a remote control with many buttons and very tedious menus.
Apple will provide an industry wide new standard if they indeed want to do something 'inseanely great', hopefully it will be affordable and not crippled like both of the Apple TVs.

A game changer will be if the Apple TV has enough power to run nice games, enough speed to be seamless, and a very nice way to interface with the users.
I don't think that they want to enter into the Kinectic or PS Move market but into very easy to play games like we are seeing in the iOS App Store.

As of today, even this is a nice proof of concept, a Mac connected to the TV is still the champion of this game.

I don't currently own an AppleTV but this is making me think twice about that. Especially considering there probably will be no upgrade to the current model with an actual television set rumored.

I need a Slingbox App. The main reason I am staying with ATV is for my DRM Movies from iTunes. App store for ATV would certainly increase sales of the ATV by a significant margin.

Still trying to wrap my head around how exactly this is possible....

While also debating whether or not to head down to my local Apple retail and buy them out of their ATVs.

$100 computers here we come...:D.

It's simple. It's just like the iPhone with the A4 SOC that can output to 720P Screen.
Difference is the Apple TV has an HDMI output port that automatically makes the display output fit the screen.

I'm very excited about Apple reducing the fragmentation (THAT'S RIGHT, I SAID IT) of their products. I want full app enabled iOS for Apple TV and iPod Nano Watch. Perhaps these kinds of hacks will force Apple's hand.

On the other hand, if I had an iPod Nano watch,iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV that all shared apps, I might run out of device authorizations for iTunes pretty fast!

The Nano"watch"does not run iOS

Nooo! I can't have my wife taking over the big screen with her Angry Birds

Prime example of how pointless this hack is. Many apps weren't made to go on the TV so just like these hackers did, they had to rig a way to control the app. How is that better than just playing on your iPad or on a computer where the controls are already there.

Apple has been selective but they picked apps that would actually have a benefit in being on a tv. And they gave developers the whole AirPlay Mirroring.

If these hackers want to do something that actually makes sense, how about creating an iOS emulator that runs on the Mac with full functions and without having to be a developer.

i see serious potential with this. Once the on screen keyboard is eliminated (for non-touch screens) and windowed apps can be activated, this will be great.
