I'd imagine as long as it continues to be sold, it'll continue to get tvOS updates. tvOS 16 is compatible with the AppleTV HD.
Hopefully that’s the case and they don’t have some sneaky way of knowing which ones came with the old remote maybe via serial number and cut it off from updates.

I’ll buck the trend…

With a silicone case on it, I really like the Siri remote (with big trackpad)

Briefly tried the newest one and really dislike the loud click sounds and “trackpad on buttons” solution.

Could live with either but prefer the older remote (silicon case required though!)
Ill buck the trend too. I dont care about the remote. I had the old silver one, the one pictured in this article, and have the new one. They all are remotes and i never remember caring while using them.

Have you tried the "source" button on your Samsung Remove? I have a Philips TV and when I press the "source" button and navigate to the Apple TV, it wakes it up automatically.

Edit: actually, now that I think about it, I wonder why the AppleTV remains in my sources when it is off. My Xbox for example does not. I guess the Apple TV never really shuts off completely?
Yeah, I tried that. It just ends up with a blank screen and no signal - until I wake up the Apple TV with its remote.

Agree'd, I prefer the new one, but neve had an issue...other then they are too damn small. I can't tell you how many times I've lost it in the couch. The fact the new remotes don't have find my build in is unacceptable imo.

One of mine is vintage and it still works fine. So why is being vintage so important? Are people collecting these things?

I’m glad I’m not the only one that preferred the original Siri remote. I tried the new one for a week and liked some aspects of it but mostly hated it. The edges are so sharp in the hand and I hate the “buttons as trackpad” solution. I really missed the large flat trackpad of the original as well as show amazingly light and comfortable it is to hold. So I returned my new AppleTV with the new remote and stuck with my old one. Still love it. Having a must button was nice but whatever. I would add that I have a Tile 3M command taped to the bottom of the remote to orientation is a non-issue. Yes that’s a hack and yes orientation was a HUGE design failure with that remote but once you fix that issue it a joy to use.

I own 3 of the touchpad remotes. I learned too late to save two of them from being cracked that they HAVE to have a silicon case on them (glow in the dark sometimes helps a TINY bit to find them when lost…) but otherwise, I’ve grown accustomed to them and no longer mind them.

I too am a little bit worried that they’ll stop receiving TvOS updates for a while longer, but honestly, I won’t replace them any time soon if they don’t.

I have one of the originals, but it’s not used anymore. When I upgraded my 1080p tv to a 4K tv, I picked one with a Roku in it (knowing that Roku’s have very long support cycles). This has been just as expected. The TV has received constant software updates with new features. I’m not sure about Android and Google powered TVs (like Sony’s), but this completely destroys Samsung and LG.

I don’t miss anything from the Apple TV because all I used were the typical streaming apps and AirPlay. All of which the Roku has. The Roku remote was also a breath of fresh air. Haha

It's actually the first time I think it's very early. Got one and it works really well.
The remote is not perfect though.

The remote was "trackpad on buttons" all the way back to the MacBooks that cane with the little white media remote.... like 2006. The glass trackpad version is supposed to be used as a video game controller... really. The newest remote is a return to old-fashioned form.

I agree but it can be hard to get my fat fingers to the edge of the pad with the case on. Otger I like the remote with a case. Should have a couple more buttons for functionality though.

Yep, hate that remote. Had to buy third party grip to make it at least holdable but still can't scroll through a video or podcast without some drama.

Steve Jobs would probably have still supported stuff as old as the 3rd Generation non-HD Apple TV.
you mean the same Steve Jobs who discontinued software support for Power PC computers three years after discontinuing them?
The same Steve Jobs who stopped supporting 2006 computers in 2011?
The same Steve Jobs who used to make iPod touch customers pay between 10 and $20 for software updates?
You have to be joking.
You cannot be serious.
Steve Jobs was a visionary. He was brilliant. He got things done that needed to get done. He knew the right people.
But this revisionist history really needs to stop.
The non-upgradable Macs? that started under Steve.
The locking down of operating systems? That started under Steve.
Pretty sure the “five years vintage, seven years obsolete” policy Also started under Steve as well.
Most of the things people hate about Apple these days started long before Tim Cook took over. it’s just easier to look back with rose tinted glasses.
Honestly, if Steve were in charge, I wouldn’t even have been surprised if Ventura completely dropped support for Intel applications And if the Apple TV HD would’ve been cut out of software updates three years ago

That POS remote is right up there with the hockey puck mouse. When first using the AppleTV remote it occurred to me that I would always need TWO remotes on hand - the AppleTV remote and the TV's remote (for no other reason than to just turn the TV on and off). Epic fail right out of the gate. Trying to use the remote only got worse after that because of its disgusting ergonomics and later dropping it and having the glass fracture only added to the grief. Hated that remote (and the arrogance/incompetence that went into it's design) with every fiber of my being...

Does your AppleTV remote not work to turn on your TV?

Our TV can be turned on by the AppleTV remote via the remote's infrared signal.

I do agree though that the thin AppleTV remote is very poorly designed. It's way too thin and very easy to mistake which side is the top or bottom.

It’s possible the MacRumors article is wrong. But that’s not what the article says. Here’s the very first part of the article:

”When the Apple TV HD was first released in 2015, it came with a first-generation Siri Remote without a white ring around the Menu button — only units that shipped with this ring-less remote are now considered vintage”

It clearly says the entire unit is considered vintage. Not just the remote.

if the article is wrong and they just made the remote vintage, I’m fine with that. That remote sucks and I can not believe they haven’t replaced it with a version that supports Find My yet.

Having to upgrade the remote when they finally come out with one that supports Find My is enough of an insult to us Apple fanbois. If they are deprecating the entire unit, I am re-evaluating every piece of Apple hardware I own to see if I want to stay on the Apple ecosystem with it in the future. Just too many of these “Screw you Apple fans!” have been coming from Apple. And I’m a software engineer who:s about to retire. I was going to buy a MacBook Pro and develop some ideas I’ve had into iPhone software (probably give away for free, I’m retiring and don’t need the money). I might be writing Android software instead.
Again, “vintage” does not mean what you think it means.
It does not mean that the Apple TV HD will stop Receiving software updates.
It’s not. I’m literally running the beta of 16.0 on my Apple TV HD right now. The same Apple TV HD I bought six years ago.
When 16.0 comes out to the public in the fall, you’ll be able to install it. Your old remote will still work with it.
Nothing is changing in that department.
The only thing that’s changing here is if your Apple TVHD breaks and you take it to an Apple store, they might not be able to get you that original remote.
That’s it, that’s all it means.
“Vintage” in no way always reflects what Apple’s future plans are with a device.
The 2007 iMac was made vintage in 2013, but continued to get software updates for an additional 2 1/2 years and security updates for an additional 4 1/2 years after 2013.
Just because it’s technically on the vintage list does not mean it’s going to stop working.

This literally makes no sense? As others have said the TV box on sale 'today' is 'exactly' the same as the one they've now made vintage. Only the remote is 'slightly' different. Definitely seems to be planned obsolescence to me.

Meanwhile Nvidia is still updating its 7 year old Shield TV, I think.
Original Apple TV HD released in 2015 will still be getting software updates. You can put the beta on it right now.
The only thing that’s changed is an Apple hardware coverage classification.
