You can get this easily. I think is is under "accessibility" in the settings menu. There you can select to have a highlighted border around the selected icon. It helps a LOT in knowing where you are!

I do not like using my phone as a remote, or touch screen remotes period. To me if I have to look down at a remote to see what I am doing the remote has failed.
I tend to use Harmony 650 or 700 in most rooms. I have the Harmony One in my main theater room because I have too many components for the 650/700. I just wish the Harmony One didn't have the touch screen and had buttons next to it like the 650/700 or the 880 it replaced.
As far as having to click down a bunch of times, I don't have to do that. Just holding the down button on my remotes scrolls down quickly. I find that much easier than continually swipping over and over. Once you get close to where you are going then you start clicking one at a time so you have greater control.
Once I turned the touch settings to slow I pretty much eliminated the mistakes when sliding.
Are you sure it won't work, have you tried?
My ATV3 is behind my TV in my bedroom and the remote works fine.
