But but...I thought AppleTV+ sucked and had mostly mediocre content according to this forum? That must be why it got Oscar nomination. 😉

He made a chip. That's great, but let's not get amnesiac too soon. Wanna ask the same developers what their experience has been with the butterfly keyboard, touchbar, endless Mac Pro wait, infernal heatsinks across the board etc.

And yes, TC is way more compelled by photo ops, media presence and virtue signalling than tech.

He’s the guy who gave you a Mac Pro, replaced the butterfly keyboard, and did their own chip so they don’t need to deal with Intel’s inability to meet its own roadmaps regarding thermals.

Still waiting for evidence about your “photo ops” and “media presence” argument - the guy’s hardly ever seen. Steve Jobs was everywhere in the press all the time.

And if ”virtual signaling” means “not being an ******* who discriminates against other human beings for stupid reasons,” and saying so publicly, then, sure, I agree.

I thought Greyhound was surprisingly boring. Really suffered from not being on a cinema-sized screen I think.

Wound’t an infernal heatsink have to be really good?

We only discuss Apple’s successes here not their numerous failures please cease and desist

Greyhound was boring to me. Tom Hanks worried expressions couldn’t add enough suspense to make it entertaining. I do feel like the boomer crowd and those into war films would enjoy its glacial pace though.

Apple TV is so bad that I only used 2 months out of 12 free months they gave me.

feel free to disagree but Apple has no shows part of cultural zeitgeist.

I like Wolfwalkers quite a bit, although I don’t think it stands a chance against Disney/Pixar. The other nominees I don’t think I can really comment on, as I will admit that I don’t like the storylines of most Oscar winning films over most of my adult life. I’m not saying that they are bad, I’m saying that I am not interested in them. And that statement literally predates the existence of Apple as a company, let alone a media company.

Ok, speaking as someone who watches some Apple show maybe 2 to 3 times a year I will say that I disagree. Most of the shows that they have get good to very good reviews, a decent number were nominated for Emmys and I think a couple won. The people making these series have won a lot of awards on Netflix or HBO or Showtime or Network TV and evidently their Apple TV shows aren’t some giant fraudulent rip off, if you liked their earlier work you will like their Apple programs.

Which is why I can’t judge them. I didn’t care for their earlier work on other services. But I don’t deny that many people, including lots of my friends, thought that the shows were good and deserving of the awards that they got. They just aren’t a subject matter or style that I care for. I don’t tend to like politically themed shows and that is NOT a recent trend for me. I have never liked them. But that doesn’t make them bad shows, that makes them a show whose theme I am not interested in.

My problem with Apple is too many similarly themed shows out of the small number of total shows that they have. I will admit to being an escapist when it comes to themes, and most of the Apple selection is rooted in reality. Most, not all.

I do hope that their version of the Foundation books is well done, and I will probably hold onto my subscription, or renew if it lapses, when it comes out. So far I have paid $0 for the last year and Apple has extended my subscription until summer. And there have been a few movies and shows that I watched and enjoyed, so since it’s no skin off of my back I will keep it around.

Having worked on the VFX on Greyhound its nice to be up for some Awards for the crazy hours we did on that film. shame it was not shown in Cinemas but at least more people got to see it on Apple TV.
Agreed, I was on the sound team and it's pretty nice to be recognized for our work; often times (especially in sound) you put it crazy hours on a show and if no one notices your work then you did your job right. Plus it can definitely be a career booster to have your name attached to a nominee.

What exactly should I ask the butterfly keyboard developers? Whether they are eternally grateful that they weren't fired and banned from ever working in tech again?

Way to go, Apple! I haven't watched Greyhound, but I have watched Wolfwalkers and it was amazing! Everything from the story, the characters, the animation style and the soundtrack made it quite the treat! Also, speaking of the soundtrack, I have pre-ordered the vinyl for it and I can't wait for that as well!

Wolfwalkers was great. It's up against Onward, Over the Moon, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, and Soul.

I found Greyhound to be rather dull, despite the dire situation it depicts. Still, the nomination for Best Sound is deserved. Instead of categories for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, the Oscars now have a singe category for Best Sound, and Greyhound is up against Mank, News of the World, Soul, and Sound of Metal.

It's odd that it faces the movie "Soul" in both categories.

Apple has spent a good amount of effort entering for all these award shows. Really surprised Greyhound was even a contender. The storyline was flat one dimensional, and rather boring - speaking as a fan of Hanks.

After reading this news, I went to watch the “Wolfwalkers". My god, even though it has a very good storyline, I cannot see any slightest chances EVER EVER EVER EVER it could compete with “Soul”.

Apple didn't actually make Greyhound, did it? It just bought it in a bidding war after it was made. Well done for having deep pockets Apple!

Correct. It was originally going to be released by Sony. But Sony sold it off in the wake of pandemic. Apple only bought and 'aired' Greyhound. I wouldn't applaud Apple for any awards Greyhound wins.

Greyhound is mainly a Playtone production - it was a passion project for Tom Hanks and his long time partner, producer Gary Goetzman. Congrats to them.
