Nope, didn't work for me, Apple TV hdmi control set to on, works great I use AirPlay and it switches input, BUT even if I switch to another input, when the Apple TV sleeps it shuts off the TV:mad: I think Apple could expand this to have options for turning the tv off and on, you could set it to off for turning the TV off and on, but leave the hdmi control on.

I have other devices that have 3 settings, hdmi control on plus options for turning off or on so I can leave hdmi control on and set turning off and on to off.

On my Samsung TV (circa 2007?), sleeping the ATV has it change to the Antenna input which is never used. Because it's the first one in the list?

Works fine for turning on ATV. TV and ATV both power up. Need to test what happens when I change TV input to another. I don't really care about sleeping ATV.

TOUCHDOWN!

If I have the HDMI control set to "On" on the Apple TV and after watching ATV for awhile and wanting to go back to Cable, I switch the input on my HT Receiver to a different input (ex DVR) and then let the Apple TV put itself to Sleep (ex 30 minutes) then the Apple TV goes to Sleep but my HDTV does not receive the Power Off command.

So...

I now have the ability to be watching the DVR, pick up the ATV remote, wake ATV up, have my system automatically switch to the ATV input, watch ATV for awhile, and then manually switch back over to DVR and when the ATV goes to Sleep it doesn't affect the HDTV at all. That's great news, better than it was for years. The dream though is to be able to hit the button, put Apple TV to Sleep, and have it just switch the input back to the prior state. Praying for Apple to make this happen.

I've never been able to get HDMI-CEC to switch a receiver HDMI input back after use. It'll switch to the devices HDMI input when you power on,mbut usually stay there when you turnoff. If all your equipment was connected to a tv then it probably would switch back.

My Sony Blu-Ray works that way. If I'm watching Cable and then press "On" on the Blu-Ray, the HT Receiver changes the input to Blu-Ray. When the movie is over and I hit "Off" on the Blu-Ray, the HT Receiver reverts back to Cable. It's the way it should work.

For Apple TV, it was an awesome surprise on Friday that finally, after a decade, ATV would change the HDMI input automatically. But then it shut the power on my TV off when I put it to Sleep and that was a major downer. My fix, just change the input manually back to Cable when you're done watching Apple TV, let the ATV put itself to Sleep. Gets me halfway there.

I have a a Sony Bravia - and the Apple Remote switches inputs when turned on, and turns off the TV when I select sleep. However, I strongly suspect it's turning the TV off via IR.

My Sony HDTV behaves the same way, but nothing to do with IR. In my test cases to work around Apple's poor HDMI power control, in changing the HDMI input manually from ATV to Cable and then letting ATV put itself to Sleep after 30 minutes the Apple TV remote was on the coffee table pointed straight at the TV, so it's not IR.

Something in my Sony system (TV, HT Receiver, Blu-Ray) is allowing Apple TV to put itself to Sleep but not turn off the power to the TV when the input is not on Apple TV.

I too can confirm this is how it works. I had it setup this way from the start so never noticed the issue you had.

If I just use my apple tv I can use the remote to turn on my apple tv, entertainment center and main tv with the press of a button and turn it all off by holding down the home button and selecting sleep.

If I use my apple tv and then want to play PS4 I press the button on the PS4 controller which switches inputs and I have no problem playing even when the Apple Tv goes to sleep (mine is set for 30 min).

Yeah, I manually changed the TV input to the TiVo and waited for the ATV to sleep and it was no problem. Usually I've never 'turned off' an ATV, so, the auto-on is great, and I can turn the TV off manually or switch to the TiVo (which is never turned off anyway, you just turn the TV off).

I have my ATV4 hooked up to an onkyo receiver... Then the receiver goes to the tv. When the Apple TV sleeps on my setup it doesn't shut anything off if the onkyo is set to a different source such as blue ray

I doubt you will see anything change. That's the big problem with CEC, and why it never really became popular. The HDMI standered only specifies that the wiring for CEC be in place not if it's implanted into the hardware. Devices also don't have to support all commands. They also allow for vender specific commands which is why CEC usally works best with all devices from the same manufacturer.

Rubbish, Apple have just done a half baked poor job AGAIN.
Works fine with everything else i have, be it samsung or panasonic..
You can control and set everything, all on, no off... control volume, external devices.

Point the finger where it should be pointed ATV.. firmly at apple.

I have a Sony TV that supports CEC, an old Denon receiver that I don't believe supports it, and the Apple TV.

I have my Bluray player into the first input on the receiver and my Apple
TV in the second input. The receiver then goes to the first HDMI input in the TV.

When I turn the Apple TV on, the TV correctly turns on. The receiver does not turn on/off. But then the Apple TV somehow switches the TV to HDMI input 2. There's no device at all plugged into the second input on the TV!! Anyone else seeing weird behavior like this?

Awesome!
Thanks for your idea, it works for my Sony TV, if I push sleep TV goes off aargh:mad:

But, switch to another input like cable, leaving :apple:TV on allowing it to sleep automatically the TV stays on! Success! Well kindao_O

Apple needs to add more HDMI fine tuning, like on my Sony TV, HDMI control setting for each device first has control on/off, then when that is turned on it shows options for turning the device on or off when you turn the TV on or off.

So if Apple just added sub settings for allowing HDMI to turn on TV or off TV it would work perfect. We could set it to NOT turn off TV and still have it switch inputs.

For now allowing it just sleep on its own is a good workaround, thanks for tip!

At the moment, I don't have my AV Receiver hooked up. Uverse and ATV are attached directly to my Samsung TV HDMI inputs 1 and 2. I put my ATV4 to sleep and switched Input 1 to watch TV on Uverse. After a short while, ATV woke from sleep somehow and switched back from Uverse on its own, so after this happened several times, my best solution was to unplug the ATV. Not ideal to say the least.

New ATV in the bedroom. It switches input when remote pushed. Turns tv off when I put the ATV to sleep. Does NOT turn on TV when I turn on ATV. TV is a Sony KDL40EX400 and said it is CEC enabled

Hmm. You may want to turn off Automatic Updates in the Software menu. Perhaps your ATV is waking up to ping the mothership and your Samsung is misinterpreting the HDMI signal.

Glad it worked, credit goes to 'modnar' on the first page of the thread who suggested it.

Hopefully Apple will add an option to allow ATV to power a TV on but not off.

Apple probably intentionally made the tv to turn off with hdmi CEC because when ATV gets any firmware update while you're asleep or not at home it will turn on the tv automatically, hence it will force tv to turn off when it goes to sleep. They should add an option to toggle this when user turn off automatic update.

One time I just switched my TV's input back to Digital TV and left the Apple TV there, and after some time it sleeps automatically and turned off my TV!

It was turning on my 2011 LG every time, but turning off worked 50/50.
Now on 2015 SONY it works every time in both directions. So it depends how good is it implemented in the TV firmware.

I have a Samsung (2013) and was able to go into the HDMI -CEC settings and turn off(have TV say No) to Any other CEC requests. Was under Anynet+ options. So ATV finally didn't turn off my tv once I did this and my Harmony remote is the only one. This forum helped a ton as its my first night with a new 4th gen unit. Thanks, all!

CEC is useful only if your particular device manufacturers implemented it in the way you happen to want. Most of the time, that won't be the case. The only real solution is to turn it off and control things manually. That said, if you get a good universal remote, you can set inputs to change as part of a macro command. That's what I do and I never have to think about inputs.
