Just bought first Apple (21" iMac). Looking to serve up all my DVD movies, TV shows, etc. I am trying to figure out best resolution to rip (I use DVDFab on PC). Apple TV states max of 720P for H.264 yet iTunes sells HD content that is 1280 x ?. So would ATV stream this 1280 HD content anyway? If so I would rather rip to a higher res than 720 if possible so I have the largest that I can afford to save on HD. Any opinions please ?

720p is a resolution of 1280 x 720 (makes the picture suitable for widescreen displays) so yes, you will be able to stream this.

720p is suitable for the majority of viewing, unless you'r watching on a screen over 40 inches, the differences won't be noticeable.

Thank you. Did you mean that 720P actually equals 1280 x 720 resolution? I didn't realize it worked that way. I would like to rip them all as high as possible as I have a 57" now and would not go any lower if I bought a new one.

makemkv on both your standard and hi def disks will be good. you can't really get much better than the original content itself. that's as good as it's going to get.

this wont work with atv though. atv will only do h.264 and you will have to run your rip through handbrake. luckily you have your i3, but it will still take a long time, especially for the hi defs.

Are you saying all these rips I create with DVDFab won't work on ATV? I can create a 980x540 file of a 42 minute show in less than 40 mins. I hope I don't have to start over and use Handbrake when DVDFab has been doing great for many years.

Anything up to 720p works so yes your 540p rips will work.
