Apple TV Plex app settings are.. Adjust Video Quality OFF Home Streaming MAXIMUM Play Smaller videos Original Quality ON Allow Direct Play ON Use Old Video Player OFF

Under the Plex app's Playback Settings (swipe down while movie the blu ray rip is playing) I'm clicking (aka, putting check mark) beside PLAY ORIGINAL QUALITY, but after a couple seconds the check mark moves down to "Convert to 4K (MAXIMUM)", a setting that I've never even seen before. What's going on? I've been using Plex for many years and never seen this before.

Could the "convert to 4k" mean the Apple TV is upscaling the movie to 4k from HD? As far as I know, the Apple TV 4K upscales non-4k content to 4k before sending out the video signal.

That is also my understanding.
Because aTV does not have resolution matching (like it does have range and framerate matching), its video output is locked to the resolution that has been selected in the Audio&Video settings. If 4K was chosen there, then aTV will upscale everything and output video signal is locked to 3840x2160p.

It's an HD model, not 4k model Apple TV.

The TV is actually 720p (I think...older Vizio). The Apple TV is an HD model and is set to 1080p output.

I've watched this rip before on this setup with zero issues.

I just did a total reset of the HD apple tv and tried again. Same result. I have the Apple 4K in another room. It plays the same blu ray rip from plex, but at "original quality". No issues whatsoever.

Is your Apple TV 4K connected to a 4k TV?

Yes. and its set for 4k SDR output. The selection for "Convert to 4K (MAXIMUM)" is not even shown as an option when playing this blu ray rip on that setup.

They both (HD and 4k apple tv's) show they're using the mpv player with DCA audio. The 4k that is playing original quality says it's displaying vc1 video at 1920x1080 41 Mbps, while the HD is showing Transode (H264-H264) 1920x1080 10Gbps.

If the Apple TV is upscaling all content to 4k before outputting the video which explains missing "convert to 4k" option.

Could it be a tvOS or Plex bug? Did you try the trial version of Infuse Pro on the Apple HD?

Why would an HD only Apple TV even have a "convert to 4k option"? I think it is a NEW bug in the tvOS plex app for HD apple tv. Never happened before. I've posted this same issue in the plex forums and reddit/plex, btw.
