Does anyone know if there is any difference in picture quality between streaming 1080p iTunes movies from my iPad via Airplay versus streaming the movies directly from iTunes?

Also wondering if anyone has any thoughts about Apple TV3 PQ vs. Vudu. I'm a Mac addict and have all the gear, but Vudu still seems to have the edge in PQ when viewed on a 65" plasma.

I'm psyched that Apple finally stepped up to the 1080p plate, but are they going to keep improving the resolution via compression and streaming algorithms?

Because ATV 3 is still lagging behind, IMO. No reason Apple can't be both the convenience champ and the videophile's choice, right?

    :D

Airplay is capturing your screen on the fly and sending it to atv simultaneously it will never be as good as a real 1080p itunes movie.

If you are perfectionist on watching movies on your great led or plasma tv then watching movies via airplay should not be an option for you. In fact airplay is designed for different purpose like looking at photos, working on apps like photoshop or similar that works better with bigger screens, keynotes for presentations and so on.

Then again, if you do not mind losing a piece of quality, you can watch through airplay.

    airplay plays the files directly.
the only big difference is battery use on the iPad. you can always use the remote app on the iPad to play the file on iTunes and then airplay to the aTV.

UKbeast is talking about the airplay streaming in mountain lion, or the mirroring aspect from iOS. Neither one of which comes into play when playing videos.

No picture quality diference, however you may experienced some loading issues, since you are overloading the network steaming the movie twice.

    Also Audio is compromise.

Thanks for all the input re: AirPlay!

Do you think Apple will tweak ATV 3/iTunes 1080p picture quality over time, or are they done, moving on to apps and TV sets?

I get that there's almost no way ATV can fully compete with Blu-Ray because the file sizes are so much smaller, but I ask because colors are more washed out and details not as sharp as Vudu HDX, which is streaming through the same internet connection as iTunes, so there's really no excuse.

    Appreciate the wisdom!

Considering they are moving to "everything on the cloud" kind of thing, file size would be important, so knowing SJobs, he probably said "that is good enough for most users", so my guess is that is all you will see until the next big leap on the device.
