Great talent, BUT he overbudgets his movies. He could spend a lot less producing his films, but he’s old and doesn’t understand how to make new movies at a manageable budget.
Instead of knocking his age...I like to say he may have a lot of experience in making movies under his belt.

Yawn. Yes, he's a great talent and has made some incredibly memorable films, but that was a long time ago.

The biggest problem with ATV+ is Apple's slavish focus on top level Hollywood talent. They are paying through the nose to sign up A-listers, but what has that accomplished? It certainly hasn't made for an interesting service. Apple was ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over Spielberg at their launch event. Did anyone even watch the ATV+ reboot of Amazing Stories? I haven't heard anyone (outside of tech forums) even mention one ATV+ show.

Apple can sign up all the pricey talent they want, but that talent has to deliver, and so far that has not happened. Instead of focusing so much on marquee names, they should focus on quality content, interesting stories, and good writing, all of which was sorely lacking in the one ATV+ show I've forced myself to endure (For All Mankind).

The thought of more boring creative bloat from Scorsese does nothing for me. My biggest worry these days is that Apple will obtain rights to content I like and turn it into their special brand of bland creative mush.

I mean... 2013 isn't THAT long ago. (I'm setting aside The Irishman as I haven't had a chance to catch it yet)

Horrible comparison. Apple TV+ has got content on its platform, of which nothing is exceptional. That's the point.

The iPhone had rich web apps. I would say it is a valid comparison to weak content. Both devices started with little on them.

I agree, and I'd rather see movies from directors that take their time. It's not like they're sitting around twiddling their thumbs for ideas in the interim. And Sorcese has been executive producing the heck out of things for many years, including some TV.

As for The Irishman, I watched it twice in a single weekend; it was that good. I still flash on the nuances of Joe Pesci's facial expressions.

Personally I haven't been interested in anything he's done in a while. I find him somewhat overrated. He makes the same movie again and again, same character types, etc. You already know what kind of movie you're getting before the opening credits roll, because it's Scorsese and he's pretty much a one note filmmaker. I know a lot of people love his movies and I won't argue that he's very talented and a pillar of the industry, but to me he's a total bore.

Personally I'd like to see Apple focus on new and emerging talent and take some chances with ATV+ instead of playing it safe and going for Hollywood dinosaurs.

He can produce well. The only problem is lackluster results when a job is all ready sold. I don’t know how their specific the contract is, but seems like Apple is throwing a ton of money at these types of deals as they have no other vision rather than services to grow the company. Sad.I would prefer Apple spend money developing great innovative products and flawless software that just works with the innovation.

I think they launched the AppleTV+ service too soon. Apple has been at its best when, like its best hardware products, they make a release and everything is there are and ready.

They should've taken a year or two, signed up to film and TV makers and announced the service with a big catalogue of high quality stuff.

Instead they launched with what, 8 shows, that didn't set the world on fire and no chunky back catalogue.
Because of Wall Street pressure. Just like Apple Watch was probably released a year too soon. Back then Wall Street was in a panic about Apple supposedly not innovating anymore. Heck one clown put out a rumor that the board was thinking of replacing Tim Cook. Now Wall Street is obsessing over Apple and services, diversifying revenue streams. Which is why Apple is doing everything it can (good and bad) to grow services revenue.

But are they really growing services? There is little evidence that News+, ATV+, Arcade, or even Music make much (if any) money for Apple. The vast majority of "services" revenue is App Store commissions and Apple Care extended warranties. Music probably makes a little money, but there's no way the others do. Apple's "services" revenue evaporates overnight if they lose their App Store monopoly.

Huh?... Maybe you're being sarcastic, but I don't think so.
He's pretty much a living legend and can ask for whatever he wants. He also has a ton of experience making films, so he's figured out how he wants to work. Simple as that. To say that he "doesn't understand" is astonishingly naive and arrogant. If you have to, you can use a rock to drive a nail, but anybody who can afford a hammer knows it's worth using.
Now, it's fair enough to say that the establishment studio system is wasteful in the way it throws around money and resources, but if you're operating in that world, then that's the way things go. It has nothing to do with age. The establishment music industry is also embarrassingly wasteful, but there it's predominantly "young" people burning through absurd volumes of cash...

Scorcese is best known for... After Hours? I don't think so.

How about including Raging Bull or Taxi Driver on that list?
Yes. Whoever wrote the story seems to know very little about Scorcese and couldn't be bothered to do any research. If they were just regurgitating what Apple provided, it reflects poorly on Apple.

The guy is a legend, and he has made some of the best films. But he is an old man now and to be honest I was not impressed by the Irishman with all his geriatrics playing younger men. Sorry Robert Di Nero et al.

I think it's great Apple are recruiting some real talent and looking to the future, they certainly have the money, but when my free year's subscription runs out in a few months time I certainly will not be renewing it for now. It's going to take some time until they come up to HBO's larger library.

But this is definitely the way things are going, companies like Netflix, HBO, Disney, Apple, Amazon et al producing their own shows. Some big companies fighting for pieces of the subscriber cake.

I would like to see Apple investing in future talent to make modern classics for the future :) They certainly have the resources.

I'm cool with this, as long as they actually hire a film editor this time unlike The Irishman.

And some people couldn't care less about iMac teardowns or how many cores a processor has. Just scroll past it, you don't have to read it.

I'm glad others notice this! I have no idea when the could care less came about. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever unless of course you could care less! I've noticed this over the last couple of years and find it really bizarre.

Agreed, just scroll past it...no big deal. Good job MacRumors doesn't just cater to specific individuals.
