Hi all

I am having issues with getting the Apple TV remote app and wireless audio sync working.

I have followed the directions on the Apple support website. I updated the software on the Apple TV, rebooted the Apple TV as well as my iPhone. I also made sure the Apple TV is connected to the same wireless network.

I have no issues pairing the iPhone. I can see the iPhone paired in Settings -> Remote app and devices and have been able to calibrate the wireless audio sync just fine in Settings -> Video and Audio.

I can even Screen Mirror and AirPlay videos from my iPhone to my TV without any issues.

However, when I launch the Remote app, the app can see the Apple TV, however does not connect. error: “Can’t connect your Apple TV” and then says make sure on the same wifi network. Which I obviously am otherwise I wouldn’t be able to Screen Mirror.

iphone 11 with iOS 13.7
Apple TV 4K with tvOS 14.0.2

any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Could it possibly be that your iPhone isn’t on the latest software version?

I wanted to check here to see if anyone had any solutions on iOS13...and would upgrading to iOS14 really solve the problem? I am hesitant on upgrading given some work apps not yet ready for iOS14 yet.

Ok plot thickens...just tested on my wife’s phone 11. iOS 13.7. She has no issues with the Apple TV remote app! She does, however see two Apple TV boxes under “choose a TV” whereas I only see one?? Only the bottom “Apple TV” option works as the top option, also “Apple TV” does not work.

any ideas?

OK I rebooted router, mesh network and time capsule. Still same issue. Any other ideas?

have you tried removing your phone from the remote section of the aTV settings app, and the re-adding?

Yep, I removed everything I could, restarted the apple TV, then re-paired or re-added where needed. Doesn't make sense!

Are you using the inbuilt atv remote that you can add to control centre or the remote app they’ve recently discontinued in the App Store?

I'm using the one built into iOS13. Same method accessing the ATV Remote on my phone and my wife's iPhone 11: Swipe down from control center on top right corner and click on Remote.

Just checked each of these points, same issue. Really odd. I seem to believe this is an issue with the settings on my iPhone 11 as my wife's iPhone 11 doesn't have any issues. Just can't seem to find a difference in setting!

Ok quick update to this but for me the plot thickens!

same hardware - iPhone 11 and Apple TV 4K now with the latest software 14.2 and on Apple TV as well.

what I noticed is that when my wifi is OFF the Apple TV remote app connects and works! No idea how the app actually connects (?) but screen mirroring does not work.

When I turn wifi back on, screen sharing works but the remote app does not connect again.

any ideas how to make the Apple TV remote app work here? Thank you in advance

Not sure what to suggest, it just works for me.
I just bring up control centre on my iPhone and select the remote app that’s inbuilt into iOS.
Edit:
Have you looked in the ATV settings under Remotes and Devices to make sure your iPhone is paired?

Thx Gonzo for the quick response. That explains probably how the remote app was still working after I turned wifi off. That's because it was indeed paired via bluetooth.

I removed the iPhone and re-added/re-paired again (held the phone next to the apple TV and entered the 4 digit code). Still same behavior:
- Wifi off: remote app works, screen sharing does not work
- Wifi on: remote app does not work, screen sharing works.

for info, Apple TV is connected via Ethernet

Any other ideas?
