I currently don't have a apple tv, because I use my xbox to stream content through the tv (no need for pics, and music, even tho xbox can do that)

Appletv3 could change my mind if it offers things that I can't get otherwise

That's just one crack at it [googleTV]. There are plenty of Android phones on closeout, as are Apple white MacBooks, and various other hardware. I get an email about iPad (1) closeouts almost every day but I wouldn't judge that product as a failure.

The products you mentioned are on close-out because the manufacturer replaced them with new products...

Where's GoogleTV's new product?

I had the 1st gen Apple TV and was happy with its capabilities. I could stream music, buy or rent movies online and watch them and show my photos. With the 2nd gen Apple TV I'm even happier, because I can stream everything and now watch Netflix movies. I don't need anything more. Eventually all of this capability is going to be built into the TVs themselves, but until then, I'm as happy as I can be. And it only set me back a hundred bucks, a bargain over the old ones.:) :)

Wow, no wonder the AppleTV is a hobby. To Apple's standards that's pretty low volume.

Three things could change the numbers for the better significantly:

1) More content - They still don't have all of the major content providers onboard.
2) The App Store on the AppleTV - It is well known that the AppleTV is an iOS device in many respects. There has to be some way to get at least the web apps to work on the AppleTV and for that matter Safari.
3) A subscription plan like Netflix for streamed content.

All of those updates would cement the AppleTV and expand it to 500,000 units a month rather than per quarter. Netflix is looking fairly weak now that they have significantly raised rates. Apple needs to go for the kill. Redbox and others certainly will if Apple won't. I know I'll be canceling my Netflix subscription come September.

I was seriously looking forward to an updated 1080p ATV this year since I now have two TV's in the house. I love it and was hoping a new model would drop this fall.

What's the reason for an Aple TV

While doing some classes at the local Apple Store I see them using the Apple TV. It must have a purpose there. Or is there as the many iPads are there, as sales aids. So maybe I still don't know of any use for the Apple TV.

I wish that Apple would just pull their finger out and provide an AppleTV app store. It's such a kludge to have to stream iPlayer over a potentially flaky wireless connection from a battery-powered device to a hard-wired unit that has more than enough grunt to run the app itself.

The iPad/iPhone makes an excellent remote, but it seems ridiculous to tie it up with streaming duties when I ought to be able to use the AppleTV to do this directly, whilst using the iPad for other tasks at the same time.

That'll be your ISP or another problem at your end. I use a UK iTunes account in the Netherlands, since we can't even buy the thing here, and it works like a dream.

I replicated it in an Apple store using locally stored content on my iPhone. Then we looked at movie trailers and spotted it there.

How can it be my ISP for locally streamed content?

Jerky doing what? Streaming?

Playing items from my iTunes Mac upstairs, airplay from iPhone/iPad

It's a known error, with frame rates and 50/60hz - personally I don't understand all the crap behind it. I'd just like to watch a moving landscape that doesn't stutter.

I love my ATV2.

One thing that would make me love it more is if it were able to access networked hard drives. Having to always have a computer on with iTunes open is the one thing I dislike.

Just not having to leave iTunes open would make me happy. It's laziness on my part, but my computer is on the third floor, my ATV in the basement. I hate getting settled, ready to watch, and then taking a hike through the house when my Mac IS on.

We need a AppleTv appstore....and we will get it soon. Apple knows we want it.

Everyone is talking from wishful thinking with this. Apple needs more than a couple million ATV owners to make an App store even worth development. It's like gaming on the orignal iPods. Hard to control, and hardly used or purchased, and that was with 20 million iPods in the wild. I'm sure they had some take aways from the pre-touch days.

Also, the apps everyone says they "want" compete with Apple's core offerings. No, you won't get Hulu unless Apple is the one who buys them. Pandora maybe... but not likely. (And it's really time to upgrade to Spotify anyway. Sorry, Pandora, you need to go back into your box now.)

iPad mirroring is an issue too, since it doesn't support the first iPad, only the iPad 2, which chops the user base in half. Still, that presents the most likely case. I could even see apps for the ATV via Mirroring with better graphics, etc. for a larger screen. The new Nintendo console sort of seems to use a similar approach.

What I personally want to see is more content partners for the ATV, much as Plex has channels like Food Network and such with on demand streaming. (Only ones that actually work, unlike Plex and others.)

Yeah, the fact that you can't really setup a headless media server is one of the real shortcomings of the ATV2 infrastructure.

ATV2 is nice, I use it for TV Youtube, and Netflix all in one place, for the most part; but yeah it's a hassle to have to have iTunes machine running to use the iTunes you have. It works well, and compared to my consoles, it draws an insane low amount of power while it's running. I can let those consoles rest until I want to game on them.

I would love it if, for all the bought content you have on iTunes (or at least the iCloud'd ones) for ATV to be able to have access to listen to. That would be a great feature for which a good number of stuff you wouldn't need to wake a computer to sit there running while it streams iTunes content. They have an iCloud now, having the hookup for that would be the next good step.

Let's do a little exercise.

Why does the Apple TV need an App store?

How would you control those apps? With the existing remote? No, too limited. Probably you'll suggest that Apple include a touch screen remote, but then the price would skyrocket from $99 to at least double that (more like triple).

So ok, people should just use their iPods and iPhones and iPads to control the Apps on your TV. Exactly, but then why does the app need to run on the AppleTV when there's more processing power on the handheld device and an already established App Store?

I've been suggesting this for quite some time and Apple has been consistently following steps on a path to realizing this vision: Apps run on your touch screen devices and stream appropriate content to the TV.

The new AirPlay Mirroring brings this vision nearly to fruition. Apple just needs to release more developer tools to make this easier to implement. Give developers the ability to specify a separate UI for a second screen.

For example, a news app would display the news story on the handheld screen (i.e. iPhone or iPad) where its more comfortable to read while pictures and video of the story show on your big screen where that content can best be enjoyed. The Mail app would let you read the email in your hands while attachments show on the TV. Video games would give each player a private screen and the TV would serve as an overview of the full game. The YouTube app would play videos on the AppleTV while you could control the video on the touch screen and read and post comments. There's already a Pandora App for iOS and it works great with the AppleTV.

We don't need a 3rd App Store and yet another copy of an app. The "AppleTV App store" already exists and we'll see more of it with the release of iOS5 and AirPlay mirroring.

And here's why this won't work. Let say you have a family of 4. 3 or 4 iphones, maybe a couple of ipads. Who's device rules? Does everyone need mirrored apps? Does Mom need the Nickelodeon App to run the kids games? What if the kids want to see the NBA video from their app? "Just wait till your father gets home?"

Also, there needs to be some consideration of the WiFi environment. Does the streaming idevice need to always be in close proximity to the ATv? Many houses do not play nice with all wifi signals...

They can run this from the cloud - you can already see apps bought on one device on another, under the same login - but keep it running on the Atv.

The current Apple TV is great, but I don't see why they can't upgrade it to the A5 chip and provide 1080p support. I heard they were going to update it in September with the iPods, but now that's not happening? WTF?

I just don't get Apple's strategy:

I have ATV 1, which offers more functionality than ATV2 as it has internal HD and NAS streaming via (jailbreaking). I'm a real ATV fan and convinced a group of friends to follow suit

ATV2 doesn't support 1080p, no sign of ATV 3 and Apple's stance on blu-ray support in mind-boggling...

So last week I gave up waiting on Apple and got 100€ Bluray player than can also stream fullHD mkvs, my fullHD camcorder footage etc. from my NAS. I'm impressed with the outcome. Pitfall is the loss of Apple's superior user interface but I can't wait forever to deliver 1080p content to my TV !
