Apple TV Set up questions-

I just recently purchases an some new toys and wonder what the best set up it.

Apple TV 4k
65in Vizio E65-E1
Onkyo TX-NR555 7.2 Surround sound
Polk T-Series speakers.

So far I love it all but I have a question on the Apple TV sound output. I have everthing passed through the receiver and then to the TV. I have the Apple TV audio set to Dolby 5.1. Is there a way to get other audio out options. Like Atmos? Thanks.

Apple TV doesn’t currently do Atmos, whether it ever will remains to be seen.

Best available from :apple:TV right now is DD7.1 and that's not available in all movies. If you want to take max advantage of your receiver & those Polks, go 4K Blu Ray. Discs remain the best quality picture & sound option for quality hounds.

Now expect 10 guys to chime in to try to convince you that the iTunes version is perfection (or beyond perfection), but you won't get that from those who can be objective. I love my :apple:TVs too- have owned every model. But a spade is a spade... especially when someone is chasing best quality movie SOUND options.

FYI: Apple themselves have implied that Atmos may come, but when is always the question about all such "just one software update away" spin. With :apple:TV, sometimes a "when" is in the next version or the version after that, 2, 3, 4+ years away.

Thanks for the info. I have an XBOX One S that displays 4k Disc and I can definitely see and hear the difference. I was hoping I was just missing the settings with Apple TV. Heres to hoping Atmos comes soon.

Note that while it's not trivial, one can rip BDs into an iTunes version for the convenience of on-demand via iTunes instead of having to "fumble with discs" (as so commonly slung around here). There is currently a thread saying that 4K discs can be ripped now too, the resulting file dropped into iTunes and :apple:TV4K will play them.

If one goes this way, they can opt for less compression than an iTunes version though hands are still somewhat tied by the DD7.1-at-best audio limitation. Some are appending higher-quality audio tracks to their files probably in hopes that some future :apple:TV or software update will have the licensing and software to then be able to play those tracks. OR they can use other playback apps that have licensing themselves. I see much praise for Infuse and Plex for example.

From my perspective, Disc (especially for the sound) is still THE best way but the ripping-a-copy option (if it doesn't already offer an iTunes download option) is nice too. The infamous "kids with jelly on their hands" scenario or similar can support the idea of owning the BEST option and creating the lessor version too. Keep that jelly off my 4K master disc!
