Long Way Up was fantastic. Daytime is interesting though. What does that mean in the age of streaming? I guess it’s synonymous with family friendly or more topical content (I.e. not movies or dramas etc.)
What you think it means if you don’t overthink it. Kids programming, talk shows, soap operas etc. The sort of thing you’d expect to find if you came home at 2 in the afternoon and turned the TV on to random broadcast channel.

Well deserved too! I can vouch for both Ghostwriter and Long Way Up. Long Way Up was incredible. Ghostwriter was great for the family, and I enjoyed watching it too.

"They love me, they really love me!".....yes ATV+ is loved by critics circles and award show attendees. But it's wider appeal is suspect IMHO. I know that some others love ATV+ but I'm dubious, again, of tangible wide appeal. I assume Apple needs in the ballpark of 30 million paid subs to make it revenue neutral. I suspect their not close to that in paid subs.

I've mentioned this before (repetition is so repetitive) but Apple's wide appeal series (and the first series from the actual Apple Studio) is coming -- Masters Of The Air. 200+ million budget, Hanks/Spielberg-huge names producing it, probably highest res native filming, action-history-drama-comedy(the book is very good), a series that will appeal across multiple generations. If they can just get Band of Brothers numbers(number on HBO from 2001), ATV+ could add 10 million paying subscribers in just a few weeks (and be able to pitch to these new viewers a new iPhone, M2X laptops, Awatch 8 and! Pong: The Next Chapter' coming to Apple Arcade 😅)

TV+ is definitely a loss leader. Though probably nowhere as near as low as News+ or Apple Arcade. Would be surprised if TV+ hit over 10 million subs. There’s a lot of great content at a great price here, but we’re in full-on stream fatigue.

Stream fatigue is an angle I hadn’t considered. It seems a good argument that is the case. Netflix Prime Disney Paramount HBOMax AppleTV+ Sling Philo Fubo etc etc etc etc etc etc
Possibly ripe for consolidation and IMHO definitely ripe for a service that offers multiple streaming services within a single app for a bundle discount pricing.

Unfortunately Apple doesn’t break down their Service sector by subsections: ATV+ Arcade News+ Apps AppleCare ICloud Music. For Apple this is its second biggest revenue generating sector behind IPhones hardware sales. It’d be interesting to see what is and isn’t making that huge Service revenue (certainly Apps, Music, AppleCare are). But for ATV+, Masters of the Air could reach 300 million in cost to produce. If ATv+ doesn’t reach 10m paying subs from it? Ouch, major net loss for sure.

Long Way Up is my comfort food. It's not all that exciting if you think about it. But it's like being with two good friends, riding together and explore. Sometimes, the destination is a dud but as they say, it's the journey, not the destination.

Ewan and Charley are just so darn likable.

Yea, but he has a point…. The term made my head tilt in momentary confusion.

”Daytime TV” - is that term the word version of skeuomorphism?

Judging by how the oscars viewership has declined, how are these Emmy Awards holding up in this day and age? Does it rely on viewership?
Myself personally I’m seriously uninvested in these since several years ago… it’s only thanks to MR and others that promote it, which I do find nice and all the recognition but I don’t see myself tuning in.

Fatigue: this is truly becoming insane. There’s so much subscriptions/streaming everything. Add to that software venues too, from the Adobe’s of the world (and third party plugins, looking at you insanely expensive Red Giant) to things like SetApp and Co.
I found myself installing recently some “Tubi” app as it had some Danish films that were recommended, it’s free and relies on not that intrusive ad spots… but jeez, that basically felt back to TV broadcast packaged as yet “another Netflix”.

On the breaking up in subsections: maybe for now it’s better if they keep it together, of all the streaming services the ones I enjoy the most are the Apple ones (except News+), it just works very nicely all together: music, shows, games “install one here” and also “there on that device”, continue hearing a playlist on the Apple Watch while jogging, come back walking on a podcast, etc… if the numbers were broken up they would probably go the way of the HomePod too soon. My humble opinion.

Between this comment and a previous one at the beginning I’ll be giving this a try!

If it's streaming, how do they know what time of the day people watch it?
Not only do they know what time of day people watched it, but they also know where they were when they watched it. And probably a ton of other stuff too. Don't ask me the "how" part. :D

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly Apple TV+ is. I would say it's actually not a loss leader, it's not getting anyone into the ecosystem that isn't already in it. It's also not a true stand alone product, imo. It's currently treated as a bonus for being an Apple customer, a glorified version of throwing in an air freshener when you buy a new car.

I don't mean that metaphor to be flippant or derisive of TV+, but I think it's actually a fair comparison with the value of apple plus obviously being far more than the air freshener. In the end, it's a nice bonus but I doubt it is bringing in or retaining customers for Apple at the moment.

I am not sure how much weight Daytime Emmys really have anymore, but hey it is will deserved still. I cancelled my Netflix a while ago and only sub to Apple TV+ right now. I don't miss much.

There isn't a massive amount of content on Apple TV compared to most other services, but what is there seems to be really high quality. You could spend an hour scrolling things the Netflix offerings and not find anything worth watching you haven't seen already.

Someone who consumes a lot more TV than I do would probably not find enough to keep their interest in Apple TV, but for me it has been a perfect balance. Lots of shows I look forward to their weekly updates and I am very excited for Foundation. I would love to "see" more Calls too, not sure if that is up for any kind of renewal.
