I just purchased an Apple TV 4k and I'm having a strange sound issue. Audio seems to be missing on apps like Netflix and Plex. It will play sound but dialogue is missing. It almost sounds like it's trying to play in 7.1. I have the apple tv connected to a 5.1 Vizio Atmos soundbar which is connected to my tv via ARC. The only fix I can find is going into the settings and disabling Atmos and change the audio format to 5.1. I have never had this issue with plex or Netflix outside of Apple Tv, 7.1 audio gets automatically encoded to 5.1 while using a Roku for example. Any ideas how to fix this short of disabling Atmos?

To me the licensing of Atmos to Apple stipulate Atoms ONLY in the setting in Apple TV! I'm sorry to say this unless you have Atmos on 5.1 system is not Atmos capable!

The 5.1 system I have is Atmos compatible. like I say, it sounds like it's trying to play 7.1 surround. If I play a 7.1 title on my iphone or ipad or Roku there are no missing channels, only with the apple TV
