I was wondering if anybody has had this problem. My wife got me the new gen Apple TV for Christmas. It's having weird problems. Streaming to Netflix or Hulu is fine. It might stop midway and buffer a sec but that's it. That's also not an every time occurrence. Now, for some reason if we rent a movie through iTunes it's awfully slow to buffer(usually popping up and saying 8 hours until ready but after 30 minutes it will start finally) and also does it when streaming from my computer iTunes library. My computer is in my sig and I'll admit is ageing. It's updated though to current software. For instance last night we wanted to watch the movie "Life". I had it on my Mac Pro upstairs. I selected it and let it sit for a second after pausing it when it initially started, so after 20 minutes we started watching it and 58 minutes in it started to buffer again and took forever. Does anybody know what could be causing this?

Assuming you got ATV 4. There is a FREE App called SpeedTest. I recommend you install it and check your speed at the ATV. Also, good to know if you are WiFi or Ethernet. Ethernet is more reliable. If on WiFi the New ATV 4 supports 802.11ac if your router supports it.

I have noticed the same issue when streaming movies to my Apple TV 4 using iTunes home sharing on Wifi (the movies are located on my Mac Pro). Sometimes the movies buffer for a long long time. Especially if I move to a new location in the timeline bar. These movies are small in size and standard resolution. There is no reason I can think of that would explain this behavior. Youtube and Crackle steam from the internet fine by the way. These movies play fine from my Mac, iphone and ipad when loaded on the device. I have not tried an Ethernet connection but I don't think it is a wifi speed issue. I am very disappointed, as this was one of the main reasons I got the Apple TV. I have not tried Plex yet.

I have problems with slow DSL for Internet streaming - seems like the AppleTV does only 1080p content.

Though, Fox Now and PBS seem to now throttle down and I get smooth video, like on my consoles.

You have to make sure you have the fastest network within the home or broadband internet if your content is 1080p.

I cannot speak to the Apple TV 4, but in the ATV3 you can choose your desired video resolution in the Apple Store settings.
