Apple TV streaming question

I am considering buying an Apple TV but I want to know if I can stream tv shows frim online streaming sites to my Apple TV.

I have a 2008 Macbook (white plastic) and I watch a lot of jdramas but the small screen is not great for reading subtitles...and the laptop gets hot.

So can I just stream the jdramas to my Apple TV? And from apps like NBC, CW, ABC and Crackle from my ipad to Apple TV?

Some services are directly streamed, but the list isn't customisable.
You would need to download the content to an iDevice or computer first,
then stream it from there, which doesn't solve the problem of the computer getting hot.
