Just picked up the new Apple TV, but I am having issues getting 5.1 dolby digital to work on most of the Apps.

I know it is setup properly with my receiver because Apps like iTunes Movies, Netflix, and HBO Go work fine - my receiver recognizes that the sound is coming in as Dolby Digital and sounds great. However, on Apps such as WatchESPN, ABC, HGTV, and pretty much everything else I could download, the sound was stereo only.

Is this a limitation of the App? This is a major disappointment if the Apps are not broadcasting in 5.1.

Yeah, if you are absolutely certain iTunes and Netflix are working fine (you can use my free Speaker Check app to verify if this is so), then unfortunately the likely issue is with the individual apps not supporting Apple TV. Another possibility is the apps are 5.1 capable, but the programming sent by the app is not in true 5.1. Either way, send feedback to the developers (and Apple - just in case it is a bug on their end) and let them know you want 5.1 support.

That's because not all stream providers send a 5.1 signal. This has nothing to do with the Apple TV. You'll want to contact the developers of the apps (ESPN, ABC, HGTV, etc).
