I have the first generation 4K AppleTV but can't play 4K videos on the YouTube app at 60 frames a second. 60 frames is only available at 1440p. Is 4K@60 possible with newer AppleTVs?

I can watch 4K@60 videos on the YouTube web site using my Mac Studio M1Max, but would prefer to use the AppleTV YouTube app to view them.
I have the 2021 AppleTV 4K model and it can play 4K HDR at 60fps.

My guess is that they will put an A16 in it.

The A16 satisfies the criteria of "faster chip than A15" and "cheap to manufacture" since it's a 4nm/N4P chip (as far as I know, N3B and N3E used for A17/M3 and M4, respectively, are significantly more expensive). This might allow them to hit the $99 price target.

IMO Apple should make a wireless camera accessory for the Apple TV, as a wired/built-in camera may not make sense for people who have the Apple TV box in an A/V closet or some other location away from the actual display device. (Yes, Continuity Camera exists, but what if you want to use your iPhone while on a call?)

I dont know what more they can do outside of adding a USB C port to enable users to hook up a webcam for facetime calls. The current implimentation of FaceTime on Apple Tv is a bad joke. You got to mount your phone or connect an Ipad (It doesn't even work with a mac) and its just messy at best.

The simple solution would be for them to put out a new one with a USB C port so you can buy an overpriced seperate Camera and just have it all work like that.

Short of that, idk what you can do with the AppleTV anymore hardware wise.
Put an M4 in this thing and finally get these entrenched consoles some competition. Of course, it needs games. I’m sure developers would be eager to bring some better games if the hardware wasn’t as hamstrung anymore.

Surely 8K would be the next logical step by now, at least for future proofing?

Yes, we all know 8K video content is still niche, but a lot of new stuff is being produced using higher than 8K equipment (10/12/16K) and then mastered down to 8K with lossless audio, ready for future release when bandwidth/storage issues diminish.

Also, Thunderbolt 5 has been released too (CES in January had a couple of pre-release TB5 hubs, for example), so having the two devices each with their bandwidth increases out and about around the same time, would make sense.

I have ATV, Roku and Fire TV. The only thing about Roku is the annoying volume on the right side of the remote. For me, Fire TV's interface is terrible. ATV has a clean interface. The remote is okay.
I would like to have a browser. Yes it makes little sense but some videos only stream online. More apps that are available to iPad would be nice too. I have the 64 version from 2021. Sad to learn it can only store apps and games. No music, photos or videos. I guess Apple does that so they can sell iCloud for that.

I still own and use Apple TV 4K gen 1. It’s connected to my Samsung Q950t home cinema system and connects to my router using Ethernet.

Zero incentives to upgrade.

It has been over a year and a half since the current Apple TV was released, so you may be wondering when a new model will be released. Below, we recap rumors about the next-generation Apple TV, including new features and lower pricing.

apple-tv-4k-yellow-bg-feature.jpg

The current Apple TV 4K was introduced in October 2022. Key new features compared to the previous model from 2021 include a faster A15 Bionic chip, a larger 128GB storage option, a slightly thinner and lighter design, HDR10+ support, a USB-C port on the Siri Remote, a lower $129 starting price vs. $179, and more.

What about a cheaper box $99 and a no holds barred Xbox / playstation killer M1-4 box any chip would do.... $399
10 cores 256GB....

"With only one month remaining in the first half of 2024, it is unclear if this timeframe remains accurate."

"Remains accurate"? What's actually unclear is if it was anything other than a rumour.

This is where I'd place my wagers.

A wireless rechargeable camera would seem to be very on-brand for Apple at this point.

I'm sure it'll be a slick product - but only 1080p output because, well, why would anyone want 4k conferencing? It'll have a 4k sensor but will use it to auto track (it'll be fully buzzword compliant because it'll have AI for that!!!) the person/people in view.

Plus it'll have some overly-complex yet simple mounting system to allow it to be placed "anywhere."

I mean, this is 100% speculation on my part - and perhaps somehow wishful thinking - but it's also kind of what's needed if they want to use an ATV as a video conferencing hub.

My very first 4K generation still doing strong so unless the next one has some kind of killer feature (and I don’t expect cameras) so I can still wait with replacing it.

My ATV is 7 years old so I could do with an update. I love the ATV but don’t really know what else Apple can do with it.

No they wouldn't, developers well publishers make their decision on the potential return on investment and the simple fact is the user base isn't big enough. A lower price might help but unlike a Playstation people buying an AppleTv aren't automatically gamers, most are buying for streaming video content and maybe audio so even if it increases the user base it's only a small percentage who would buy the games. And alot of the AppleTV userbase wouldn't upgrade either.

If Apple wanted to really make a push on gaming they would be better off producing a gaming box separate from the AppleTV. It could have streaming video as part of it but would need a more slimline OS as opposed to TVos. They would however need to go in hard, they would have to approach a few established franchises and buy exclusive rights to the next entry for atleast a year or two. That would drive sales of the device and maybe encourage other Devs it was viable platform

I’m not buying another Apple TV until a.) one of mine dies or b.) they open up the lossless audio codec and allow bitrate audio pass through for DTSX, etc.

I know that does nothing for their bottom line, but it would make me buy a new box to replace my Shield Pro.

Can’t believe it took almost 36 replies to this thread to mention passthrough. Enabling this would sell a lot more Apple TVs
