Apple has won the rights to make a film adaptation of BOOM! Studios' graphic novel "Snow Blind," starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

The film was fiercely fought over in a competitive six-way bidding war, reports Deadline, but exact financials are unknown. Gustav Möller is set to direct and Patrick Ness to write.

The thriller graphic novel by Ollie Masters and Tyler Jenkins tells the story of high school teen Teddy, as his life in a sleepy Alaskan suburb is turned upside-down when he posts a photo of his dad online, only to learn he and his family are in a Witness Protection Program. A man seeking revenge visits their town, followed soon after by pursuing FBI agents.

"Snow Blind" will be the third Apple Studios production. It is currently developing an adaptation of "Killers of the Flower Moon" with Martin Scorsese. Last week, Apple Studios won the rights to "Emancipation," starring Will Smith. While Apple has heavily relied on commissioning third-party production houses for Apple TV+ to date, Apple Studios is the company's attempt to make entertainment in-house, bringing more creative control and reduced production costs in the long term.

Though I'm seemingly in the minority in that I like TV+, I'm enthusiastic over their upcoming movies and shows recently announced. I have watched probably 80% of what they currently offer and, though in varying degree, have enjoyed everything I've seen so far.

Darn, I was hoping this was an adaptation of Icelandic author Ragnar Jónasson's excellent crime fiction, Snowblind.

I think you spotted the problem: in a few months you managed to watch 80% of the whole catalogue. That should not be possible.

Apple started from scratch, like it or not, so it’s true the amount of content is still limited. The real topic here is the quality itself, the fact that they are adding new and varying content every month, and their commitment to procuring or producing better media with fantastic creative tallent attached. Their are SO MANY THINGS TO WATCH and fill our time; Apple TV+ is just one of those. For the record, there are quite a few of us that think they are off to a great start.

I respectfully disagree. With the exception of "Fraggle Rock", TV+ is all original content. The fact that it's only taken "a few months" considering how much of my stuck-at-home life is spent watching TV is more impressive than a negative that I still have a number of shows or movies to watch, including "Greyhound", "The Banker", "Little Voice" and others. Compared to the early days of Netflix, Apple is killing it with quality original content. JMO ☮

YESSSS!!! Jake is another of my favorite actors!! How does Apple keep doing it? They keeping getting my favorite actors to big roles (it might help that most of my favorite actors have starred in the MCU or DCEU at one time or another. Plus everyone loves Tom Hanks, so I guess that's not a surprise casting choice in Greyhound).

I for one am thankful that it's possible to actually reach bottom with a streaming service. When I am showed TOO many choices like Netflix, and so much of what is there ultimately disappoints me, I just shut down and can't decide on anything to watch. Every time I used to launch Netflix, I would just spend 30 minutes going back and forth deciding what to watch and hoping I wouldn't get burned and find my time had been wasted. I don't have that issue with Apple TV+ at all. There is a manageable library of content, such that I can watch everything offered, at my patient viewing speed. And, I know from Apple's near perfect track record that whatever I turn on will be rewarding and highly entertaining, quality production, with excellent acting, writing, sound design, and 4K video quality.

You should ignore the trolls. Literally.

It make these forums so much more enjoyable 🙂

The problem is Apple has more than a ten year time frame but an audience with a ten minute attention span. In ten years we will see the TV service like the original iPhone that had no apps the first few years. My problem so far is everything is just a little too "woke" for me so far.

The Tom Hanks film was good and this looks like it could be normal with no underlying social message for me to digest.

Out of curiosity I downloaded the first issue of this series last night, made it less than halfway through before putting it down. Just another piece by an author relying on Alaska to work as a plot device to make an otherwise forgettable story somewhat less forgettable but clearly didn't bother to actually VISIT the state before exploiting it. Small town Alaska is unlike small town anywhere else in the Lower 48, sorry. It's not just the isolation but the people who choose to live in that sort of isolation, especially in this day and age, that sets the tone of the town. No idea how this final product will turn out but going in with lackluster source material doesn't fill me with optimism.

Though I understand (and agree with) your statement, I was not replying to a troll. It was an observation that a large percentage of people who post on any tv+ topics are negative, some with definite reasons beyond just for the sake of upsetting the apple cart (pun intended).

To be fair, Apple did not in any way cast Tom Hanks. Greyhound was done and destined for theaters when covid shut everything down. Apple then bought the rights to stream the already completed film.

Because you don’t agree that the content on AppleTV+ is quality? They’re called opinions.
gtfo with your straw man. Read what I write and try again? I like AppleTV+ just fine, why do you think I don’t?

In any case, I don’t have any obligation or interest in wasting my time on troll posts. The trolls are perfectly free to keep their opinions falling in the forest without my tree.

Sorry you were triggered 🤷‍♂️

I didn’t think you were replying to a troll (you may have been but I didn’t bother looking), and my advice wasn’t limited to MR forums 🙂

Once you get rid of the obvious trolls it’s amazing how much of the negativity goes away. There’s still plenty of diversity of opinion, and it’s more enjoyable to read the various opinions when the signal isn’t buried in the noise.

Personally, I haven't felt drawn to anything they've released so far. I have no doubt that some of it is quite good, but nothing has piqued my interest. They have a real uphill battle ahead of them in my opinion. I've never heard anyone outside of Apple-centric fan sites mention one of their original series or movies. I personally believe that original content is a money-pit for Apple, long-term.

I also think they are too focused on Hollywood A-list stars, as if they will somehow bring credibility to the service. Will Greyhoud be worth the $70M price tag? Will Emancipation be worth $120M? I'm probably the wrong person to ask. You couldn't pay me to sit through a Tom Hanks or Will Smith movie. Are those big deals translating into paying subscribers? Anecdotally, among the many Apple users I know, the answer is no.

Right now Apple is making so much money, they can afford to throw countless billions at entertainment and hope that ATV+ sticks eventually. It's certainly fairly priced. I like sci-fi, especially near-future "speculative fiction". I definitely plan to give Foundation a shot. The trailer certainly was compelling and the visuals looked amazing.

I still find that Netflix gives me the most bang for my buck. I love Netflix's international focus. I don't care who the stars are or what languages they speak. Some of my favorite shows in recent years have been low budget foreign Netflix shows.

I'm with you on Jake. I so loved and related to Donnie Darko, that I'll always love Jake, even if he makes crap.

You can count me as the exception to your Tom Hanks rule, though! He's the worst. He's always the same. He's like the other Tom. No matter what character they are playing, you never really see the character. You see Tom Hanks (or Tom Cruise). I've never found Tom Hanks to be remotely sympathetic in interviews either.

I agree. Apple is playing the long game. They know it will take years to build a library of content and it might take many years to land upon a Stranger Things or House of Cards or Game of Thrones level success. Unlike other streaming services backed by studios, Apple has no existing franchises to milk either. They will need to create their own, or perhaps acquire some down the road.

As I wrote above, none of their originals have piqued my interest. I don't watch a lot of TV and, so far, Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and Prime all have way more than I can handle. Nothing from Apple has managed to break through and interest me enough to watch it instead. That said, I'm very much looking forward to Foundation.

Have you tried Mythic Quest? Everyone I know who saw it thought it was an excellent, funny series.
And the lockdown special they made all over video conference afterwards was brilliant, both touching and funny.
I expect that it will get more and more popular as seasons are added.
