Ok, I may have skipped past it and read it wrong in the early morning fog...but when I purchased a TV show on iTunes this morning I was presented with a new "Terms of Service" that mentions using some of the new iTunes features (the album stuff) on Apple TV 3.0. Does that mean there is an update coming in the near future?

Many of us will be waiting for the following PatchStick in order to update, and I'm afraid that the number of people working on such a creature are dwindling as time goes on.

Just like the number of people at Apple who seem to be working on the ATV. :(

I have expected an update to be realeased any day to allow access to iTunes LP and iTunes Extra. However I thought it would be version 2.5. Version 3.0 suggests a larger update, with possibly more new features and maybe support for new hardware. Time will tell, but hopefully soon.

Does anyone know whether or not the current Apple TV hardware can support Blu-ray specs if given a software update?

Come on. Really? No. Right now, it can’t even handle 720p 30FPS.

I really hope they figure out a way to push the hardware so it can handle that, but I doubt it.

I'm hoping the software update magically puts a Blu Ray drive into the old hardware. :D

1080p will come when faster internet speeds become more pervasive. Downloading a Blu Ray quality movie over the internet would take a day for a lot of/most people, which doesn't present a viable user experience.

Ah, I see -- that's the main factor. Since there's no download market, Apple has no business reason to support those who rip and squash blu-ray discs with MKV and Handbrake.

I suspect Apple would support it better if the movie studios let them (just as they did for CD music with iPods).

I think Hollywood has a big fear of downloadable content doing to their industry what happened to the music industry (nevermind that $15 movies aren't the same as $15 albums, where users only wanted 1 song), so the Apple TV is built around the idea of streaming and downloading instead of ripping.

'Shame, too because I think they'd sell hardware like crazy if the Apple TV had a DVD drive that automatically ripped people's existing music collection to their iTunes library.

I can see the movie industry's side of the argument. It's hard to believe that more of their product would move with such a device, cool as it would be.
