Hello,
I am sure this has been brought up before, but I can not find a specific answer.
If I get an tv can I hook up a USB drive to extend the amount of movies etc. that I can watch?
Not without hacking the device. Do, however, keep in mind that for most users they will keep the AppleTV synced with their computer and most of the content will be streamed from the computer rather than stored on the AppleTV.
I reckon the reason why they put a USB port is because - appletv does not now require a computer to work... i suppose you can create a store account directly on tv.. and then maybe sync ur ipod directly with tv and have that as a base for your music etc. for those who dont like to go onto their computer.. i reckon this wil take place in a few months time for sure.
The diagnostics function of the port is what the hacking community primarily uses... The Apple TV is capable of updating its software from a properly configured USB drive.
Once hacked the port can be re-enabled.
Here in the US there is some regulation that set top boxes have an expansion port so most stbs have a similarly dead USB or firewire port.
