Apple TV+ Wins Its First Emmy With Billy Crudup in 'The Morning Show'

Apple TV+ had 18 nominations for this evening's virtual Primetime Emmy Awards, and the fledgling streaming service managed to come away with one win thanks to Billy Crudup's award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in "The Morning Show."

Crudup had also previously won the 2020 Critics' Choice Award for his role as Cory Ellison, the rising-star executive who leverages charisma and confidence to take advantage of a network suddenly finding itself in crisis.

Crudup's Emmy nomination was one of eight for "The Morning Show," with Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, Mark Duplass, and Martin Short also earning acting nominations while Mimi Leder earned a directing nomination. The show was also nominated for its colorful opening title sequence and for overall production design.

The Primetime Emmys are considered the primary Emmy awards, but Apple also previously won a pair of Daytime Emmys for Apple TV+ children's shows "Ghostwriter" and "Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10."

I'm not necessarily that interested in this show, but as I recall it Cory that was my literal favourite character. Very well deserved.

While Apple obviously is lagging in content quantity, I find that in general the quality is pretty good. Actually I found most shows of my free subscription worth viewing, a much higher percentage than my Netfli subscription. Since I don't watch that much TV, I would be tempted to cancel Netflix and continue with Apple TV+ were it not that Netflix has so many kid shows which my youngsters like to watch (in limited time allowed for them).

The first good show. Then I saw Defending Jacob. And then I saw Ted Lasso. This time next year Apple will have more hit shows than Disney, Hulu and Prime.

I'll admit that I watched the first episode of Ted Lasso wanting it to confirm all the negative preconceptions I had about it, but I'm actually really enjoying it. For a US show presumably written for a US audience, I'm surprised just how British it actually feels.

Well deserved!!! Cory was outstanding! Anniston was robbed though. This is massive for Apple. Now it’s “emmy award winning The Morning Show.” An emmy win on a streaming service’s debut show and debut year is historic, make no mistake.
