so Apple never futureproof?
Yes, they were quite early with USB on the iMac and the previous major MBP overhaul that everyone complained about. And I think that is about it?

or think about gamers?
Bwahahahahahaha!

Absolutely no.
but still a 2 year old chip however impressive it is just isn't right.
Apple is all about making money, not being cool.

many people are stating that their apple tv is sluggish now so longevity would suggest using current chips.
Then they shouldn't be using 10 year old Apple TVs.

A 2 year old chip is an embarrassment and a slap in the face to paying consumers buying a ‘NEW’ device.
It would literally make it the most powerful consumer streaming box (vs Fire TV, Google TV, Roku, etc) that exists today. It would hardly be a slap in the face.

i completely understand the comment and rationale but that's now how i think it should be measured. its flagship product in its sector should be given the latest years chip. unless there is multiple levels of product like the iPad line-up where it can be graded.

They would have to price it up massively which would negatively affect sales. It does not need the latest and greatest processor.

If the new Apple TV doesn't drop tomorrow (Wednesday) then it's not coming until 2026 and will likely launch alongside the updated Siri and form a part of Apple's home offering. There's also a part of me that thinks Apple was planning a 2025 A17Pro Apple TV to help use up the leftover A17Pros (including binned versions) alongside the iPad Mini and would release a further Apple TV in 2026 with an A19 chip (in a similar way that that the 2nd and 3rd gen Apple TV 4Ks were a year apart) and now they're just thinking to scrap the 2025 model and launch the 2026 model a bit earlier in the year... As you say, a new A17Pro-powered device in 2026 is a slap in the face.
I wonder if this means the iPad mini 7 is selling faster than Apple had forecasted and there won’t be enough A17 Pro chips left to meet a 2025 ATV’s lifecycle. I suppose depending on how quickly this stockpile gets depleted, Apple can then launch the OLED iPad mini 8 with probably all the A19 Pro chips originally intended for the iPhone Air.

Good thoughts. The iPad Mini is in a strange position because the next model will (allegedly) feature an OLED panel, so the launch is going to be heavily dependent on the availability of those panels. If the A17Pro iPad Mini is selling than Apple forecast and the OLED panels would enable a launch any earlier than Q3 2026 (as per the story on the frontpage today), then Apple needs to ensure that the A17Pro stockpile lasts until then (and possibly longer if if wants to make sure spare parts are available for repairs).
