Apple TV with Standard Television

I have a standard definition TV that does not have component video inputs. I do, however, have a DVD Recorder with component inputs that I have connected to my TV through the old composite video inputs. Would hooking the Apple TV up through the DVD recorder allow me to use it on the standard TV? I plan to upgrade the TV eventually, but I'm in no hurry to do so.

It may work, though you might see some image cropping and the like.

I had a Sony TV that was " HD Compatible ".

It had Component and DVI inputs.

Even so, with Apple TV I noticed some cropping.

That having been said ......

Now I have a 42" , 1080P, widescreen LCD TV.

Guess what????

The image on the old Sony from Apple TV looked clearer and better then it does on the new set. 🙄

Of course for the purpose of discussion - I am talking about watching TV episodes downloaded from Apple ITunes store.

have you made sure that you've reset the resolution of the Apple TV to the higher resolution?

As long as there's a way to pass the video through the DVD recorder, so that the signal into the recorder's component input comes out its composite output, this should work. Although the TV does not have to be used with HDTVs (as is popularly believed), it is intended to be used only with widescreen TVs (see the 'TV Compatibility' section of the TV spec page), and formats all of its video out accordingly. This means that video you see on your SDTV will be compressed horizontally (or elongated vertically, if you prefer), and even SD content from the TV will be affected, because the TV pillarboxes it. In my opinion it would be marginally useable, and may be an acceptable stop-gap until you do upgrade your TV.

Yes, you're right. I forgot about the 'full color out of component connection' trick, which doesn't even require any software hacks if I recall. Also, I think that if you do hack the TV you can change the aspect ratio to 4:3, but I can't offer any advice about how to do that. I was thinking in terms of 'straight out of the box, no hacks'. Sorry for any confusion.
