So I’m trying to update the software. It’s 3rd generation, and I’ve unplugged, and restarted it like it suggested.

Keeps saying the update was not successful and to restart your Apple TV instead. Which I’ve tried several times.

What could be the issue?

Had the same problem, tried restarting and restoring - no joy. In the end I reset all settings, went through start up process, logged into itunes account and ran the update and it worked.

Completely erase and set up as new with your iPhone.

on a side note...... isn’t the 3rd gen a little long in the tooth now??
