Wondering what TV you saw it on. I'm on a Sony Bravia 65" 2024 (not the second version of it that came out the following year). And the one app that shows movies in the WORST possible way is HBO Max. They figured out a way to prevent blacks from being black.
You mean Silo or Dune ?

Apple streaming on Apple TV 4k can show very dark blacks. The problem is you often lack details in dark scenes compared to 4k blu-ray. I use an LG C series OLED in a pitch-black room in cinema mode.

I hesitated a lot before purchasing a 4k blu-ray player. But it was really worth it. Even though Apple streaming quality is good, blu-ray has the edge. I kept reading the picture difference was minimal, but, in my experience, it's much better on 4k blu-ray. Picture is sharper, color tones are better, grain looks more natural, there are much more details preserved in dark scenes compared to Apple streaming and action scenes look less blurry. Sound is vastly superior also.

As for HBO max, I don't have it so I can't tell, but Prime Video seems to have some difficulties with dark scenes also (black levels aren't as dark). It probably has something to do with compression. Each service use different compression levels. Apple generally has higher bitrates than other streamers.

Watching ANY of the GOT (game of thrones) stories, series is all the same. This extra contrast, like backlighting on the picture. Letter box is pointless as it's all grey! Only app I have noticed it on so far. But, haven't watched much Prime lately to note if it's just that one. Disney+ is fine, as I checked with GOTG, and it's great.
But, yes 4kBD is perfect.

Thank you.
