Tried here, Dolby Vision when I enabled it under video for my DV capable TV apparently is self-calibrated. It told me it didn't need it.

and we are talking about LG not Sony.
LGs aren't special in this regard. They'll still need adjustments to dial in the optimum picture.

Proper settings for some things like white balance will even vary from panel to panel.

Probably because it supports Dolby Vision. I just tried to use it on my Sony Z9F and it was grayed out for this reason.
You can still use it in non-DV modes.

It seems there is no reason to upgrade my Apple TV 4K to the new version. I can buy a new remote for $59 and the color calibration feature will work too (on both the 4K and HD I have upstairs). I guess these upgrades are mainly to bring new users into the fold rather than entice existing users to upgrade.

I thought my 4-year-old Samsung was pretty well (manually) calibrated, but this made a pretty nice difference. I’m impressed.

Finally. A really good feature.
Unfortunately I doubt it will work on projected screens. Any info on that?

Yes you should set your  TV to SDR and match frame rate and dynamic range, having it set to DV all the time is just fake DV for all non DV content. Anyway, I’m having an issue where it’s not recognizing my phone, I get the pop up to turn my phone around but nothing happens, and then when I get closer the proximity sensor kicks in and my iPhone goes black

This confuses me. My Sony has so many different color profiles for different inputs or situations. HDR, Dolby Vision, and SDR are all available through the Apple TV and then the Sony selects my preset based on content. How does this mesh well with that?

Finally got it, you really have to hold the phone close

I own a lg oled C9 and the feature improved my picture so I don’t understand why you wouldn’t need it. Unless you had your panel professionally calibrated
Eh, I dunno. I have a C8 and I trust rtings settings more than whatever Apple thinks looks good.

Every TV is different though, even the same exact model, which is why people get independent calibrations. I’m not sure exactly how in depth Apple’s calibration is but at the very least it’s tailored to your specific TV which in theory should be better
