apple universal dock

So my parents are getting an iphone, they will probably charge it through the wall. However I rather have them use the dock, so plan to get them a dock. Friend of mine has this apple dock. It's old, so my question, work with Iphone or no?

Apple currently sells a newer version of the dock you posted:

The only difference appears to be the shape of the infrared receiver on the front and the older one has s-video output port.

The newer one definitely works 100%. The older one should work for syncing but I'm not sure if it will charge the phone.
