Was a reason provided by [corrected: why] a calculator, even if very simple one, was not included in earlier versions of iPadOS? It is mind boggling that it wasn't included and I really want to know why that business decision was made.
They had said before they were wanting to do something proper with it, not just port the basic iPhone one. Guess it wasn’t just high on their priorities until now.

Look, Craig addressed all these criticisms, and all future criticisms, last year:

"Truly, we live in an age of wonders."

I am glad to see Apple finally, finally tackling some of the basics.

Did you actually watch the segment for Math Notes?

Its basically Soulver... with a pen. Ironically, Soulver is available on the iPad, and iPhone, and Mac, and you can use a keyboard which is quicker, and it can do stuff with AI as well these days. It's a pretty awesome app.

Soulver ain't graphing variable changes in real time:

iPad 7 is getting the calculator app while iPad Pro 10.5 with a better chip and RAM is not. Let that sink in!

Only needed the power of A12 (edit) A10 to run a freaking calculator. They should've put in at least a basic scientific calculator on iPads years ago

Wonder what level of math it can do? Integration? Fourier transform? Differential equations?

Most important for students: can you make it "show your work"?

Let's see how long your post stays up. I posted the same thing elsewhere and after my post got deleted I got this warning:

This is a reminder from the MacRumors moderator team to avoid making posts that consist only of a single word, a slang abbreviation, an emoticon, a trite or overused phrase or meme, or are in other ways frivolous. Your post may have been removed for this reason. Please make posts that contribute to a thread rather than clutter it. Examples of frivolous posts: +1. Word. LOL  Feels snappier. Cool story, bro. A post that only contains only an image.

Apparently, these are a no-no as they're just "A post that only contains only an image"
Yeah I understand where the rule is coming from, and it’s often a good rule, but many times a one one/phrase/image post does positively contribute to a thread even if it just provides a good laugh. It should be judged on a case by case basis, it shouldn’t be a strict rule—hopefully this is the case.

Yet another poster that didn't watch the video.
If you read my comment more carefully, I was referring to the standard scientific calculator, not Math Notes. That should’ve been implemented years ago. The latter though, understandable needing the power of later chips

This was the most interesting item to me of the updates. Two thoughts:

1) Hey Apple: let me touch my newfangled iPen (with the rotational sensors) to any constant, exponent, or variable, and twist up or down to see what that does on the graph. That would be uber-cool, and a fantastic learning tool to me in my JrHigh/HS/college days (...just makin' small wooden boxes and homemade tortillas now). Would be a great feature for the kids/our future!

2) As from above posts, I too was worried of no mention of RPN on this new calculator; the Big Key needs to say "Enter", not "="....

I mean, if the reason it took this long to come to the iPad was because they were waiting to upgrade it with all of these amazing new features, then I don’t mind! CalcBot has served me well for many years and I welcome this crazy advanced Calculator on the iPad!

It’s asinine it took a decade and a half for such a basic app to be included natively. Almost a cartoonishly new record of stubbornness for such a simple ask. I would be embarrassed to even announce this after so long.
While the app is basic, the "math notes" feature seems resource hungry. (live update of graphs when changing variables seem nifty and might require some processing, not sure about it though)

I remember learning how to program a calculator on my Timex Sinclair ZX computer.

I have to say Math Notes will be really useful and easy to use.

I think what happened was they took so long to get one out that it became a whole thing, as the kids say. Then, they COULDN'T just come out with a normal, expected iPad calculator app and have everybody say "we waited X years for THIS?" So they had to wait until they could do something not embarrassing.

I think it's actually the coolest part of the show and probably the one thing that will work as demoed (as opposed to the new AI Siri stuff, which I suspect are very carefully curated and will not run as smoothly in real world use).

Nothing that put any sort of stress on a modern CPU, don't worry.

Wow, that took a long time. I think they should have just started with a basic calculator years ago.

Wait what? :(

It took their best and brightest years, but they finally made it happen! Congrats to the entire team!

Now THIS is a version of Apple to be loved and celebrated. A much better version of itself. One where it leads the pack for its users, rather than trails. Very impressive. Now if they could be this visionary with the native keyboard, I might write them a Shakespearean sonnet. A promising start would be an optional number row, AI-powered voice dictation, and predictive text that shows 100% of the time - even on Google search.
