Maybe it's a way for Apple to prevent/reduce the proliferation of AI deepfakes
I like this idea. Keep more people from seeking out the deepfake-capable options by offering them something good enough for their needs… if only we could keep nefarious misinfo-spreaders from using deepfake altogether. We remain on the cusp of the unwinding of being able to trust any news from anywhere.

I expect the majority of the powerful to remain insulated from this upsetting their status quo. As systematically designed.

I suspect the limit of three styles also dramatically reduces the necessary computational power.

This is absolutely the right call for a myriad of reasons that I'm sure you're already aware of.
Sure but it's also crippling. The modern software company is scared of their shadow. You can use a camera to make dirty pictures. Imagine if all photo companies decided they had to review all your photos. Pencil companies dont censor your drawings. It's crazy but thats how the big companies treat AI abilities. Lots of cool things people enjoy....probably by far a net positive...are crippled or disabled because they are afraid someone is going to bother to make something they dont like. The censoring with AI is not accepted in any other medium.

The issue is when it comes to other people. Nobody cares if you draw a dirty picture or generate adult photos of people that don't exist. The last thing you would want is the ability to generate adult images of people that exist and do not consent.

Apple's image generator can generate images based on contact photos. It's a cute feature that becomes a nightmare if you could have a photorealistic result.

Why a limit to only three styles of generated images? That's backwards compared to what we've been able to play with for the last couple of years, needlessly.

No photo realistic option at launch is disappointing
It takes enormous amounts training data to develop generative AI models. Processing on device, limited to only data on device, means a slower rollout of additional styles, especially if Apple is very early to the generative AI race and does not plan to warehouse user data.

@fullauto I do agree. I prefer more photo realistic AI art. We already have Memoji if we want to recreate Pixar on our phones.

The AI Image tool doesn't just come up with images, it is gleaning art/images from somewhere and recreating them based on your prompt, does anyone know where it's getting these "training" images? Just random image gathering on the internet?

AI art is for grifters and thieves, I don’t care where the training images are from, I don’t want this crap on any device. It’s a spit in the face of the creative community that were on board with Apple for years before their ascension to the top.
I'm with you! I've been a designer and illustrator for 30+ years. I'm amazed at how many people are ok with art theft. I just want to know where NOT to post my art.

This thing better be smart enough to draw every model of Apple device ever made. Imagine if you get the same old Macintosh plus or iMac computer like you do with literally every other AI image generating software out there. They have one job, to get this right, let's hope Apple will care enough to teach its Ai to get some of this basic stuff right. It matters because if you want to create a desktop picture themed like your favorite computer, it would be nice if it already knew what you were referencing. Like describing an old beige Mac and it knowing what color you mean along with the texture, or transparent iMac and it gets some details right. It's a missed opportunity if it can't differentiate between its own companies products, the other GPT's hardly can.

What do you prefer about it? Genuinely what is preferable about any of this to the creative expression of real human beings?

This is probably going to attract a few laugh emojis, but whatever. Enjoy going on the record as having disgusting taste.

I mean that if I seek to create my own AI-generated art, I prefer photo-realistic results, not the cartoonish looking models Apple demoed today. I likely won't use the Genmoji unless they look more like me in reality.

It looks like you can't do anything but low rez cartoon emojis. Pretty useless and disappointing.

Personally I prefer a subtle painterly look to the images over perfect realism.
People used to think photography and synthesizers couldn't be art. Real creatives embrace change.

It turns out I'm a real human being. Even before AI came out it was often easier to make what I wanted myself rather than endlessly search Google images. Even with AI elements, I still end up doing more work fixing and collaging in Pixelmator than prompting in the AI generator. But it is a big help.

I don't claim to be a real creative. I claim to be someone who wishes to visually represent himself as close to realistically as possible. I cannot express myself the way I wish with Apple's restrictive limitations (sarcasm).

Additional models are likely coming in a future release.

That is what the camera is for. ;)

I want to make things that never existed. AI on it's own is basically a better stock photo library, with similar frustrations and lack of control. But add a photo editor and collage skills, and now you can do unique things.

What would be really powerful is if you could control AI more like CGI - dragging poses and pointing eyes where you want. Trying to control images with just text is like dancing about architecture.

I actually came to the camera conclusion doing a profound moment of thought in the shower ha.

We need more of a General Artificial Intelligence with verbal commands, like "make the eyes softer" that then solicits feedback conversationally, not merely a series of I/O

To people saying this isn’t a big deal, I occasionally let my kids use Dall-E and they love it. Today I my kids brought some friends over after school and my daughter wanted to watch the keynote because she’s interested in AI, I AirPlayed it to the TV and all the kids were literally squealing with joy over these generative AI features. My daughter in particular was glad that there was a dedicated app that she can play in, instead of having to tinker with it inside messages or whatever.
