These are cool new laptops, but the prices are ridiculous. Especially the upgrade options. For example, Apple charges $300 to upgrade to an i7 processor from the i5 on the cheapest new model, while Intel shows the price difference to be $111. It's $2,000 for the cheapest model without the Touch Bar if you add the i7 and 16GB of ram. The best deal by far is the entry level 15" model.

I agree - the price is tough...I'm getting 2 new ones for my 13 and 14 year olds...getting the base touch bar I5 with 2.9ghz and upgrading to 16gb of RAM...with Apple care and tax my total is 4500 (with education discount)! Last year I purchased the 13" I7 with 16gb for my 15 year old daughter. I wanted to buy the I7s again but just could not justify the extra. All 3 kids want the 13" - but I totally agree for 'value' the 15" is the best deal.

Honestly if I was in the market for a new laptop I'd get the 13.3" MBP with Touch Bar. Beautiful, stunning design.

I also can't live with 16 GB of RAM. Here's what I did about it, but first some of my definitions:

Laptop: A computer that is usually to big and hot to have on your lap.
Battery: A component that manufactures lie about.

My solution:
Intel Skull Canyon NUC with 4 USB, USB-C,HDMI, card reader, thunderbolt. You know, the stuff we use.
Quad 4 processor
32 Gb RAM
1Tb SSD with room for another
10 keyless dasKeyboard
Apple mouse with 3rd party driver
ASUS USB-C portable monitor
ASUS USB 3 portable monitor

All this fits in a Pelican case.

Apple did me a favor by dropping the ball, I much prefer the above. I know, it's not a laptop it's a portable. I'm also well aware I've traded Emojis for a twin monitor portable solution. Oh, price, all in about $1,700

I've had very good results using a Razer Core with a GTX 1070 on the Skull Canyon NUC, as well. This jacks up the price of the overall setup a great deal, but you end up with some great graphics performance as well.

tempted to get the new touch ar 15 inch as so low on storage on my retina macbook pro. hmm decisions.

But doesn't it take a lot of tweaking to keep making Mac OS run on these interesting options?
