You do. My understanding of the lease program is you lease it for a specific term and at the end of the term you can buy it outright for the difference between the total lease payments and the purchase price (at the time you started the lease).Interesting since it’s very easy to spend $100+ per month on AI services. To what extent local LLM can replace those will vary wildly of course. Do you have option to buy it outright at end of lease? Not familiar with this new leasing program.
Wow--that is quite a jump!Just ordered my Mac Studio M5 Max to replace my 2017 Intel iMac. I am so glad that I didn't have to wait another 6 months! Thank you Apple!
You are correct. You do. My understanding of the leasing program is you leasing it for a specific term and at the end of the term you can buy it outright for the difference between the total lease payments and the purchase price (at the time you started the lease).
Essentially the Apple Update program allows you the ability to use it for a period of time and then either return it or buy it outright. If you buy it outright the total cost would be the same as if you had purchased it from the beginning.
That said I have not used the program so my understanding may be in error. I recommend investigating as it seems like it is a great program.
Enjoy. I'm coming from a Mac mini 2018 myself, so my M5 Ultra will make photo editing a joy compared to the pain it is right now.Just ordered my Mac Studio M5 Max to replace my 2017 Intel iMac. I am so glad that I didn't have to wait another 6 months! Thank you Apple!
Little new Baby Mac CPU just hanging out while the bigger kids get all the attention today.Mac Mini M6 is on the store too.
Yes but since 2025 I have had a 3% pay increase so that is the same.... Oh wait..... Dam it!While always nice to see new and improved hardware, the cost increases are mind numbing.
In March 2025, I purchased at M4 Max Mac Studio with 64gb of Unified Memory, a 1Tb SSD, and 40 core GPU. The education price was $2609. Today, the M5 Max with the same memory, SSD, and GPU is $3469 (also in the education store): $860 more expensive.
That's a 33% increase. I understand all the reasons for the price jump, but that doesn't make it any less mind numbing.
Check out Apple's Upgrade program.Apple will give me $1285 for my 36GB/512GB Mac Studio towards a new M5 Max. That would make the 64GB + 1TB model $2514. $210/mo for 12 months with Apple Card or $39.48/mo for 36 months with a Klarna lease (I would probably take the additional 6 month extension to knock another $236.88 off and then pay the final full payment of $855.84).
Tempting but I don't need it. While I would like more RAM, it's rare that it's a bottleneck for me now that I've moved back to having a dedicated gaming desktop. I should wait for a few years. Getting FOMO on the prices though for sure.
They're clearly offering the lower starting storage amounts to soften that sticker shock by a few hundred dollars. I think it's kind of a joke for 512gb in a $2499 computer too. I'm sure the sku is there for institutional buyers like companies and schools where they actively don't want people saving lots of work to a local machine. It's a valid use case. They know everyone else wants at least 2TB and that's getting up there now $$$$.I'm sorry but this starting at 512GB storage is an insult when Apple's onboard models chew up 60-80 gigabytes just to start. 1TB should be base to match the MacBook Pro. Not sure wtf they're thinking.
exciting news! I am now looking forward to the posts asking if they should buy an M5 Max/Ultra now or wait for the M6 Max/Ultra. Personally I think you should wait for the M6 as it is going to have more power and should be a nice upgrade from the M5 in terms of performance and power consumption.
Whoops. I did a little digging and realized where I messed up. The 614 GB is the bandwidth of the RAM for the new Studio. The 786 GB is from speculation that on the new Studio.Your RAM numbers are incorrect. It was never 614GB of RAM, nor was it ever 700GB.
The Mac Studio M5 Ultra and M3 Ultra both launched at 512GB of RAM. That did not change.
The memory bandwidth is 1.2TB/s compared to the 800 GB of bandwidth on the M3 Ultra.
I didn’t know people and companies buy products without looking at the price first. In that case Apple should charge a million a pop for these! If you need to ask the cost, it's probably not for you 🙂.
Yeah I’m thinking of departing from My M2 Mac Studio Max, it’s still pretty powerful, was just running some image and video generation on it today. 🙄My M1 Mac Studio is still going strong but I'd be lying if I wasn't considering an early upgrade
I'll be checking the performance uplift closely on these ones
These are slipping into late November already.
I dunno, are people who genuinely need this type of computing power storing much stuff on local internal drives? Unlike MBPs I'd imagine apart from the OS and core apps they'd be more likely to be using RAIDed NASs and/or high capacity, high performance DASs for the data they're working with.
Yep, Comparable price but you would never have the power of the Max chip so the question is why? Doesn't make any sense to go with the Pro if you are going to upgrade it even a little bit. And if anyone is wondering about a "pro" device then they would more than likely want to upgrade the 16GB of RAM and get at the very least a 500GB drive. So the Pro doesn't make a lick of sense. Not sure I’d say bargain, but…
If you take the Mac Mini M5 Pro, bring the RAM up to that of the base Mac Studio M5 Max and add the cost of a decent powered hub (the reduced number of ports on the new smaller Mac mini enclosure is a problem for me at least, lots of peripherals and breakout boxes), you’re not very far away from the price of the Mac Studio.
That's what the Klarna lease I was talking about is.Check out Apple's Upgrade program.
Be sure to get 512 GB of RAM to cement two years of operation.Perfect for my word processing, email, and browsing!
