Apple has released a new update for the generation 2 and 3 Apple TV models. The update allows movies and TV show previews from the iTunes Store to be viewed in HD and fixes a few other minor issues.
Apple TV Software Update 5.0.1

iTunes previews - Previews for movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store can now be viewed in HD.
AirPlay - Fixes an issue that caused some iOS apps to have trouble connecting via AirPlay.
Home Sharing - Improves the reliability of Home Sharing connections.
Netflix - Addresses an issue affecting Netflix login and navigation.
Stability and performance - Includes fixes for issues affecting stability and performance.
The update can be performed directly on the Apple TV by going to the Settings menu, then General, then selecting Update Software.

Hopefully Apple doesn't do something to break my new favorite Mac app, AirParrot.

When will apple offer internet browsing on the Apple TV? Thats what I'm looking for in a update.

God forbid they implement any of the features that would make it useful, *cough cough* pull media from a NAS without the need for iTunes as a middleman *cough*...

Mine's still sitting in the box awaiting the good word from Firecore, hopefully it'll happen sometime this year..

Anyone know if this will help with netfix freezing and going to black screens and then the audio/video loosing sync? It is sad that my smart tv has a netter netflix app than my Apple TV...Apple usually means quality except in this case

Can anyone comment on the airplay?

----------

If I were you I would wait to update. The benefit is not worth the risk. I actually just posted asking about the airplay issues bc I used to be able to AirPlay my watchespn app prior to my previous update. Since then it stopped working and I ended up disconnecting and not using it. I just use my PS3 for Netflix (not to mention Hulu is an option there for those that use it).

Hopefully Apple doesn't do something to break my new favorite Mac app, AirParrot.

Hopefully you have opened the box and saved your SHSH blobs for 5.0. If Apple stops signing 5.0 which they will now and an exploit is found in 5.0 that doesn't work in any subsequent released, you'll have to jump through extra hoops to make it work.

I want antenna input on these things!!! Otherwise, they're somewhat useless. You can't even watch TV on the Apple TV.

EDIT: Ok people misunderstood what I said... I wanted to be able to record shows on the antenna like a TiVO. Otherwise, there aren't TV shows on the ATV.

Don't know why this got downvoted. One of the main reasons I returned my unopened aTV 3 was lack of NAS support without jailbreaking (also no mkv, avi, DTS, etc support). I broke down and bought a Mac Mini with an attached Blu-Ray drive as OS X can now play Blu-Ray media, and with Plex and my Synology NAS, done with all the jailbreaking days. Best decision I made.

is it only me, but is there stuff on iTunes(Mac/Pc) that isn't on the apple tv?
theres a few movies and trailers on the Mac that aren't showing up on apple tv. and yes i have searched for them.

also, I'm waiting for tv shows to show up in the New Zealand store, come on apple!!! get on the game already

THANK YOU for reminding me to do this!!! :)

I used to have a Mac Mini but I wasn't happy with the inability to control things remotely (even something as simple as turning it on/off via remote isn't possible.)

This.

Such a massive step backwards.
Agreed.

immensely ugly, impractical, poor functionality and universally panned ui, if this is any sign of things to come from apple we are in for some heavy nasties... uuuggghhh...

Apple is (was?) supposed to be about simplicity, functionality and aesthetics, this is simply too painful to even look at...

Apple TV Browsing

The already have. It is called iPad mirroring. You browse on your iPad and it is mirrored on the TV. I know this is not what you were hoping to see, but it does work now.
