So who says they're not? This may be the first step of many. I'd love to see a sitar as well.

well for starters they've had African voice instruments for well over seven years. A lot of the old jam packs had tons of other instruments from other countries.

A hissy fit over increased musical instrument diversity? Yes, they are Chinese instruments. Does anyone really believe the "soft and cuddly" Chinese government is going to be swayed by a few instruments. This has more to do with marketing to Chinese customers, and China is the most populated country on earth, so why not? China also has a rich history that has long influenced the West, you know.

Nothing wrong with adding musical diversity to the app, but Apple is obviously getting on all fours for the Chinese market these days.

Tim is always about the $$$.
Sure he is. Amongst other things that's how capitalism works. Growth, then more if that. No matter what. Imagine the outcry otherwise, especially here, if the next quarter is another decline. That will be the very same folks complaining.

I have downloaded the new GarageBand 2.1.1 on iOS 9.3.2 on my iPhone 5S. I cannot find the Erhu or Pipa instrument or the new Chinese loops anywhere in the app. I can find the Chinese percussion (drums and gongs), however. There are no other new instruments or loops in the app at all compared to the previous version, as far as I can tell. I'm an English-language user and my iPhone 5S is set up with English as the default language. I wonder if these new instruments and loops are only available if you set up your iPhone for Chinese (which I can't handle).

As per the original MR story, you may need to turn them on (show them) in iOS:

All of the new features in today's update are automatically enabled in Greater China and for Mac users outside of Greater China. On iOS devices outside of Greater China, the features can be enabled through the advanced settings menu.

I for one really like the Erhu instrument especially. Whilst I get why a lot of people are focusing on the commercial and political angle on this story, I personally hope this is just the beginning of more instruments being added to Garageband (and I say that as someone who mostly uses Logic nowadays, but GarageBand is great fun and I think a very under-promoted app for how great it sells the possibilities of both iOS and OS X). I think switches to turn certain instruments on and off is not a bad idea too.

Finally! If I had a penny for every time I'd exclaimed "Where ARE the Chinese instruments already?" when using GarageBand, I would have £3.46 exactly.
Next task? Learn what GarageBand is. And how to use it .....

So, an OSX update that crashes macs. An iOS update that bricks iPads. And now this. Remember when Apple was a tech company?

The executive floor at infinity loop must be like a three stooges episode these days. Timmy, Philly, and Ed. All spinning their wheels in random circles.

News from the year 2025:
Tim Qook, CEO of 苹果 (Apple) company briefly visited United States to discuss the opening of a new Apple store in NY.

I assume most anti-China comments are from Americans. Most people outside the US know that they live in a bubble, inundated with far more sophisticated propaganda than China can ever muster. It maybe shocking to them that real humans live outside the US, most of them do. However, good on Apple for this. Apple needs to become more globally focussed.

Mr Jobs was a brilliant charismatic nerd who promoted brilliant innovation with a passion for aesthetic and mechanical perfection. We delighted in that spirit. That is his legacy. He is gone. Mr Cook is a smart CEO who promotes Apple as a business. Successful businesses know no borders, rather they pivot on risk and greed. Apple will go where and do what it can to succeed. Mr Cook's legacy is still in the making.

Learning to write an orchestra on this thing would still be easier than trying to figure out how to shuffle a playlist in the Music app.

I think china treats their own people far worse than anyone else does. Well, except maybe with the exception of pre ww2 japanese invaders.

Been to china and a number of asian countries. Very nice people. China is kind of like here in mexico, the government is the biggest problem. Then again thats true in most places, just at different levels.

I think North Korea takes that title.
