As usual... nobody is happy. Sigh lol. Looks great to me.
Please, please think about it why. The thermals on 9th gen 8core will cook the computer or will be mega loud.
Of course we are not happy as this is really pathetic update after basically 2 years of waiting.
As someone mentioned, this is probably just a bridge and we will get a proper one in fall. Otherwise this is even worse.

Apple failed today.

eGPU are not realiable? Since when? You have eGPU chasis and GPUs with native support in Mojave. They work great and allow you to achieve around 80% of the performace of a desktop class GPU.

Still, they won't be as reliable as a dedicated or integrated GPU. Reduced performance is one thing, but you still have to deal with the poor bootcamp support and the fact that not all apps can benefit from and external GPU. If I remember correctly AppleInsider made a video a month ago where they compare the iMac Pro Vega with a Mac Mini with the same Vega card, and they said that they experienced issues like the external card disconnecting and leaving a black screen.

What bothers me more is what is not on offer than some configurations I don’t have to buy. Since 2012 the largest amount of storage you can get an iMac with is 3 TB. Where are we now with maximum HDD sizes, 12, 14 TB?

The interesting thing is that the best way to get cheap and fast storage is to get the 5400-rpm model and have the 2.5” HDD replaced with a large SATA SSD.

Its not even a consideration for a non tech savvy person who doesn't know what they are doing disassembling an iMac. I have done it on a couple and while it isn't hard, I would rather pay for a SSD upgrade at time of ordering or just boot off an external Thunderbolt 3 SSD.

I'm ok with the current design, but those basic configurations & upgrade prices are just beyond ridiculous.

4K should start with 256gb SSD and 1TB SSD upgrade max +$300 (16gb RAM as a standart in the higher spec model)
5K should start with 512gb SSD / 16gb RAM and 2TB SSD upgrade max +$500

Of course for those prices they could do even better, but it's Apple. However offering 1TB SSD for $700-800 is crazy (and it's even more in EU), pure nonsense.

I disagree with everyone saying there is no price increase. At least on the 27", if you want the current CPU option, you have to spend at least $2300. Otherwise you are getting last year's chip. Plus they did not really update the GPU and it still has a fusion drive. By keeping the price the same and using old tech, they essentially raised the price.

This update definitely gets nominated as one of the worse / less significant updates of all time.

And for sure i am not a fan of the new upgrade path system Apple is choosing for couple of its produts (see macbook pro). In order to get the good GPU or the latest gen Intel processors u HAVE to go for the $2,299.00 base model.

p.s. For those who say that there is no need to change the aesthetics, we are only asking for the design to EVOLVE and not CHANGE entirely.

i agree... it costs more to upgrade to the i9 than it did for the i7 on the 2017 models. For me being in Canada with a work discount, for an i9 and 512ssd it comes up to $2800, those same specs with the i7 processor came up to $2300

My biggest complain is that they still make non-fusion drives standard. That 5400 1TB drive is a dog and has been a dog for what 6 years now!

I'm sure the model is only there because it either (a) sells like hotcakes or (b) sets some sort of strategic entry price-point. The other possibility is that they have some big customers who require a HD-only option because reasons (large bureaucracies don't need good reasons or logic - e.g. they decided in 2009 that SSDs were insecure because they couldn't be bulk erased, and that won't get fixed until the CEO wants a machine with SSD).

As for the bezels and chin - that's pure cosmetics and, cosmetically until you can make the whole machine thinner at its thickest point (which probably needs lower-powered processors) you'd either have to make the edges thicker or increase the curvature of the back - which could negate any cosmetic improvement. Its also too good an excuse to remove the RAM slots and ports.

Making the iMac much smaller might also rule out the i9/Vega options (the litmus test with those is going to be noise and throttling).

The best way of reducing the bezels would be to fit a bigger and/or squarer display.

Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing comparisons of the nearly-fully tricked out iMac with the iMac Pro - plus how the i5 Hex iMP stacks up against the old i7 in terms of speed and noise.

What don't you get? Do you really think the average consumer cares or can tell the difference between 5400, 7200, Fusion, and SSD?

Yes. When the beachball spins endlessly, they can tell.
Your arguments appear less to be based on facts, and more on your self opinion. So stop criticizing every person who has a point that doesn't gel with your ideas.

[doublepost=1552999129][/doublepost]

The average consumer knows that they don't know SQUAT so they ask people who do, who will tell them.
I get asked all the time, "Should I buy this?"

What a Pathetic joke of an upgrade!
I do not think it even qualifies for a speed bump upgrade.

Same 10 year old external design, same old 5400RPM drives?

And Apple's senior director, Tom Borger, calls this the stronger line up ever? the best desktop in the world by far?

Who is he kidding? He should be fired tomorrow.

This week between the iPad and the iMac upgrades, clearly shows how little Apple cares about the computer line up and how little they car about innovation.

So sad...Really sad.

Apple's senior director of Mac product marketing Tom Boger:Customers are going to love the huge boost in iMac performance. With up to 8-core processors and powerful Vega graphics, the iMac lineup is stronger than ever. With its stunning Retina display, amazing design, twice the performance, and macOS Mojave that our customers love, iMac is by far the best desktop in the world.

The fully functional iMac actually $1,599. Upgrading the ram to 16gb and the drive to fusion. Or $1,699 for 16gb of ram and a 256gb of SSD. Reality!;)

What are the chances we see an all new design later this year to by mid next year? Can someone give me a logical opinion with no bias or emotion.
