Apple has released updates for iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor, introducing a handful of new features such as enhanced media search and notifications for encoding batches, as well as bug fixes.

iMovie 10.2.4 brings sixteen new solid and textured backgrounds with adjustable colors, the ability to import projects created with iMovie for iOS (version 2.3), and general stability improvements.

Final Cut Pro 10.5.3 allows users to create and save custom column arrangements in the browser, and edit them with the Column Set Editor. The update also enhances the browser search with expanded criteria including clip text, markers, and notes. Users can quickly search for clips by media type. There is the option to search for original, proxy, or optimized media, as well as missing media.

Motion 5.2.2 fixes a large number of issues with 3D object rendering brightness on M1 Macs and emojis rendering incorrectly in HDR, as well as unexpected quitting when closing a project after export, closing the HUD, adjusting the opacity of a gradient, or when dragging media or an object into a USDZ.

Compressor 4.5.3 brings notifications for completed, failed, and canceled encoding batches, embedded audio descriptions when encoding a variety of video file formats including MOV, MP4, M4V, and MXF, and stability improvements.

Updates...

I seem to have the worst luck with them.

Apparently Pages, Numbers, and Keynote were updated on the 1st, and on a system that I checked for updates on Wednesday, I got a notification that 'there were updates', and those three had updates that were released the 1st. Um, what? If they were released on the 1st, why has it not chosen to announce the update, nor even identified the updates WHEN I SPECIFICALLY CHECKED FOR THEM.

And my AirTags still haven't updated either. And an iPad all of the sudden announced it needed an update to the latest iPadOS, and I was like 'Well, that was timely'.

Update woes? Is it widespread, or just me?

My AirTags haven’t been updated either, I always update my devices as soon as new software is out, apple has been know to have a buggy automatic update feature.

Another sad update... Such a great piece of software being neglected by Apple.
At least there seems to be many few updates every some few months lately, many sad updates may equal an OK one 😛

But agreed, some key things just not there or sometimes broken. I still don’t get why for example motion doesn’t have “compound clips”, FCP has them, every other compositing app has them… still love working in them though.

Did apple plan to remove iMovie sports theme in this update? Theme and team database no longer exists.

That is why no professionals use it. There used to be television networks using Final Cut 7 until Apple decided to ditch it, since then everybody went mack to avid or premiere. FCPX is good but the problem is Apple and their way of thinking of "we can do whatever we want whenever we want and people will still want us".

While there have been some shows edited on FCPX, it is fairly clear that isn't the market Apple is going after. But YouTube creators, wedding/event videographers etc. In those sectors I am more likely to see someone use FCPX or Davinci Resolve, over Premiere/Avid.

For me, the Mac App Store rarely announces updates for a couple of releases now. My 2012 Mac Mini, though, which still runs Mojave, seems to get update announcements just fine.

I just go to the Updates tab of the MAS every once in a while, and hit CMD-R five or six or twelve times, and stuff then shows up.

CMD-R just beeps. 'No updates for you!'
