This is a business decision with the side benefit of "helping" the environment. When they replaced a device, they would give someone an A-grade refurb. Now they just need to replace an internal component while the rest of the components stay at their same age. The side benefits of not replacing glass isn't solely for the environment.
Same as removing charging bricks from boxes. Win for the environment, win for Apple.

Battery placement is a battery replacement. Duh. Never liked them replacing the whole thing, terrible for the planet.

How does this currently work with the older iPad mini 5? I’d prefer not to play the screen lottery when replacing the battery.

If the battery needs to be replaced you will get a new refurbished iPad mini 5 for the battery replacement fee.

“The new policy, as of now, is only being implemented at repair centers worldwide and not at Apple Stores or authorized service providers.” - I don’t understand this sentence. So only independent repair shops and not Apple Stores/Authorized Service Providers or what?

Wonder if it's a staggered roll out? There'll be new equipment required to facilitate iPad battery repairs.

So instead of walking in with old iPad Mini with bad battery and 10 minutes later walking out with new iPad Mini, now you either have to leave it for repair (make two trips to Apple Store and have no iPad Mini at all) or wait how long for them to repair it while you wait? Is that even an option?

Yes you'd either need to leave it or wait for it to be repaired.

It never ceases to amaze me how negative people can be on a positive story. It's not the news or content that are the problem, it's the people.

Sadly...it helps perpetually unhappy people feel better about themselves having a good slag at Apple. For a few minutes, anyway.

That’s unfortunate, but thanks for the info. Might have to look for a third-party replacement service when the time comes.

I thought although possible, replacing batteries on iPad is not that simple compared to an iPhone, and thus it's better to just replace the whole unit.

I remembered going with a friend to an Apple store in Singapore as she wanted to replace the battery of her iPhone 6. Even for an iPhone, the genius ended up breaking her screen. Lucky for her she ended up with a refurbished unit (and she was happy as it was practically like new) for the price of a battery replacement. I don't think these technicians would suddenly be an expert in removing iPad screens. Or maybe Apple have new tools for them?

Personally I would rather just get a whole replacement unit. Better than risking the tech breaking something else.

A percentage of devices will break during repair even for the most experienced and trained technicians.

It’s important to remember the devices are only as rigid as the condition that they come in at, so if device has experienced lots of drops but doesn’t have a cracked screen it may still crack a lot easier during the opening process.

Fortunately, Apple is really good on this note and will replace any devices that break or fail during the repair process.

How is that unfortunate? I worked at Apple and can tell you this was the preferred method by our customers as well as by us as it generally gave the customers a device that had a brand new shell, battery and a new or tested refurbished logic board.

I’d take it any day today for any iPad I have to replace.

People out here assume Apple refurb is like everyone else out there in the industry when in fact it is usually better quality and usually tested more rigorously than brand new devices are in China.

There is a significant variation in display quality across devices of the same model. I often end up ordering a second or third device to pick the one with the better screen. I would hate to end up with a worse screen for a device that is out of production, i.e. were I can’t easily procure another one.

Interesting point to make. I have never come across the display variation you refer to although this was more of a thing on the iPad Air models back on the day. I haven’t owned more recent iPad to speak to.

The first iPad mini 5 I bought had a very distinct shadow on one edge of the display, markedly worse than the iPad mini 4 I was upgrading from, and also had worse contrast. The second one, which I currently use, was much better, and also slightly brighter. They all have a slight shadow on one edge to some degree, but for some it is more pronounced. It’s something I can’t unsee.

The OLED iPhones (12 mini and 13 mini in my case) have significant variations in color tone and in how the contrast changes with the visual angle, and also a bit in brightness. I currently have two 13 minis with wildly different screens, one with better contrast but also drastically higher variation with the angle, and both show visibly different color tones (with True Tone etc. turned off, of course). I’m trying to decide which one to keep, as they both have their pros and cons.

Due to these variations, I’d prefer to not have my device exchanged when replacing the battery.

Let’s hope this trickles down to Apple Watch Glass Replacment too. It’s currently £284 to replace the glass as they give you a refurbished Apple Watch. Very green Apple. 🙄

I have a 3rd gen iPad Pro 11” with a cracked screen (quite a fine crack but runs across the screen). If I try and get a battery replacement will I get a new/refurbished iPad? It’s so expensive to replace the screen!

As a Mini lover it definitely is not. TouchID is questionable, terrible UI, and display controller orientation is opposite of what it should be causing all types of ghosting issues and jelly scroll. Add the $100 price bump and it’s definitely not the best Mini let alone iPad ever made.
I've had mine for a year. Never experienced "jelly scroll" or ghosting despite all the BS online. The UI is the same as the iPhone and will be changing with iPadOS 16. Touch ID has been flawless. Coconut Battery shows 98% health after 340 power cycles. In short, I can't find anything to fault on the Mini 6.

In no way will these changes “disadvantage” people. What this will do is remove a nice surprise when a battery needs replacing, but the owner of the iPad is in no way disadvantaged.

I think yours would be a full device replacement fee.

True, but let's remember that many of the negatives come from Samsung or Xiaomi agents and others that want to sabotage Apple. This has been going on for years, since this is the largest and most trafficked Apple forum on the planet, and Apple being the wealthiest corporation on the planet (which means Apple has bazilliions of jealous rivals that want it to fail).

If a customer had damage to the device, then an Out of Warranty FLAT RATE would apply. The customer would not be eligible for battery rate. Just because the battery needs to be replaced doesn't mean physical damage is ignored. Yall gotta' fix that in the original post SMH!!!
