11inch 128gb 4gb + i7 upgrade = no brainer.

Paying the extra £250 for the 256SSD is frankly nuts.

I only wish Apple managed to squeeze an SD card slot into the 11" this time. Other than that...i totally agree.

Did they take the white macbooks off of the refurb page or were they never there to begin with? Sorry for ignorance, but i've never even though about a white mb.

Well that's my entire class AND myself having to buy PC... For those of you with large bank balances, squealing with delight over what I think is madness on Apples behalf... In the UK it is twice the price to buy apple than the US and other countries and all Apple does is change the dollar sign for a pound one!

Although beautiful as a second machine, or for business customers swanning through customs an 11" in great. But it offers a serious problem for screen real estate for the sole PC for someones using it as a serious work platform... 13" you can live with to get going on Mac with student resources. As of today the price of a realistic laptop from apple has overnight gone up from £729 to £999 = £270 ($436) a lot I think you'll agree...

Although slightly slower due do lack of updates, but still a good way of getting the 'Mac bug' it was hard thing persuading people to get a MAC instead of P, now it will be impossible.

So far this year Apple have managed to upset iWeb/hosting customers, Pro Movie customers and cut out the lower end/low budget of the market. But if you're an iPhone owner you're in for a good ride... fools

Although I agree with the pricing to be ridiculous... you need a better teacher if you think thats 2 x the US cost :S

Hi all!

ANYWAYS:

i5 vs i7 upgrade: is it a huge difference? My ultimate plan is to sell my macbook pro at some point and get a desktop Mac Pro and have this Macbook Air be my only laptop. So, I was hoping to have something that MIGHT be able to handle Final Cut, if in a pinch. Would this upgrade help in that department?

Thoughts?

i7 gives you multi-virtual cores (hyperthreading) which few programs use and which you won't notice most of the time. I think it will help in Final Cut, but probably only a little and it might actually be a performance hit for most day to day tasks. It seems that some people disable hyperthreading except for the rare situations where it might make a difference.

Market Opportunity

LOL - anything to excuse Apple being cheap in their base builds. Sorry, but the price difference is very hard to ignore. I doubt it cost Apple all that much to add it. Face it, they do that to get people to step up to the model with even more of a margin.

You're free to start your own computer company and put whatever you want into your base builds. If Apple has left a hole in their lineup, you should jump in and fill it.

No.

I see the white MacBook in the refurb section of the U.S. Apple online store. $849 for the 2.4GHz model originally released in May 2010.

and my friend just got the white macbook several days ago..

Good on him, The students I work with didn't have the chance and now are running around trying to get them from where they can... The spec is good, but the real estate you loose on the screen makes a lot of difference

Good comment, in fact the other companies will enjoy the extra custom they'll get... Although nowhere as cheap as a PC equivalent, to knock off a reasonable screen real estate (11" cannot be compared to a 13") all the rest will be rubbing their hands in glee, fair play. In this age of cutbacks and lack of cash, Apple has just made PC manufacturers life a lot more rosy

PS Not you I know, but I'll add that anyone who suggests the iPad as a replacement for a real OS is a fool

PPS After contacting Apple we've found that the white MacBook will still be available for 'Academic Institution'... Phew!

any reason you prefer Snow Leopard than Lion?

or just waiting for few revision? 10.7.2 or 7.3?
Exposé is the biggest one. I just used Exposé for the first time after using Lion for a few days and I was like "WOW it works", when compared to Mission Control.

To be honest, Apple's hardware does not entice me at all what so ever. I feel like I am turning into another LowEndMac user. I do not see any reason to upgrade my MacBook to Lion or buy another Mac.

Apple is well, boring. There was a time where all this was exciting but now I am just apathetic to it. I get to be the boring old man now, at 26.

OK I'll submit, It's not 'twice' the amount, but it's still a significant difference. However after contacting Apple we've found that the white MacBook will still be available for 'Academic Institution'... Phew!

Doesnt that mean Uni's or colleges can buy a large quantity of them and place them in class rooms? Or can they give them to students or sell them on to students?

Anyone else justifying going with the 128gb and using the savings for a thunderbolt external HD?

the new air is great, but I don't like the idea of ditching the macbook. the entry level laptop was already overly expensive for what you got, but the entry level air at same $999 is not an option as most peoples primary computer. at least as long as it's only equipped with a 64gb SSD.

now you're better off to jump to the Mac pro line and get the $1,199 offering... and I don't have to buy the superdrive.

I love Mac's, it's all I own, but by doing this you're not even pretending to offer an entry level computer anymore. I've convinced a number of friends to make the move to Mac's and a number of them went with the cheapest offering and were happy.

I guess we'll see what happens

Hi all!

I had an 11 inch but sold it months ago in hopes of getting one of these guys. I definitely want to continue the 11 inch thing, because the form factor, to me, is really nice and I didn't mind the reduced screen size.

The 256 hard drive option: So stupid expensive! I remember doing okay with 128, but 256 would be a little roomier. And I'm assuming there's no way of swapping out the drive after the fact.

Thoughts?

Looking at this: http://ark.intel.com/compare/54617,54620 there is a difference but I think the question you're asking is. Is it worth the price? I don't think so.

Here is a summary of the differences between the i5 and i7:

100mhz on stock clock speed.
1mb L3 cache

Everything else is the same. I think apple has done well choosing the i5 here. If you look at the price from intel, its a retail difference of $67.

Yeah, I haven't thought about the battery drain. Darn. I suppose I need to be patient to see reviews of how big a drain that is. I do use the 11inch for primarily writing in cafes, so I wouldn't want to limit my time even more. I mean, are we talking 5 hours vs 4 1/2 hours or something more subtle or drastic? I understand these things aren't in peoples hands yet of course!

Apparently its down to about 4:46 hrs per Laptopmag.com They say the prev gen 11 MBA got 5:18 in the same test.

But I'm not sure if they conditioned the battery first (full charge, then full discharge, then full charge again.).

1.7 Ghz? haha i remember buying a 2.4 white back in 2008 why would anyone subject themselves to such a slow processor

Are you comparing a 2008 C2D at 2.4G with an i7 @ 1.8 and saying that you prefer the 2.4?

You might want to spend a little time on the intel site or Arnand before you buy a new machine...

Be really interested to see if the display has improved on the 13" over the 2010 model. I sold mine for two reasons 1: Missed the Backlit Keyboard & 2: The viewing angles and colours were awful. Obviously the keyboard is now solved but I may get back on a 13" MBA if the screen has improved from last year.

That's my rationale. The only thing that takes up space is itunes. I'm hoping the rumored time capsule itunes server eventually comes out and then i'll have tons of space left over for the usual stuff.

The cost of the upgrade to 256 is hard to justify. Also, i'm not convinced that these the HDs in these ones will be any harder to upgrade then the previous models. I'm pretty sure nothings changed, but I guess we will have to wait for a tear down to be sure.
