There’s no way any company can keep supporting older devices. Apple is much better than any other companies in that sense but there’ll always be a cut off.

Why do you want "updates" on older Apple hardware? Apple typically ties new features to new hardware, even if the older systems are capable. So, unless you really want to slow your devices down, use older hardware with OS versions that were current at the time of hardware release.
 
When I first got the IPad from my partner I had to Reset it to erase everything as it was in his name when it restarted I went through the process of registering to me I then got a update which I dare say was as I had been Reset it works fine with the current Apps I was only asking a general question .
