This is from the Verizon site: "I currently have iPhone with another carrier. Can I keep my current iPhone when I switch to Verizon?
Yes, if you have iPhone 6 or newer, you'll be able to use it on the Verizon Wireless network."

That's out of date. The 7 posed a new issue when they decided to go with Intel radios that are only compatible with AT&T / T-Mobile services. The Verizon iPhone's have Broadcom chips like the 6S's.

Ah, yes. Forgot about the newer phones having two different modem manufacturers. Thanks for the catch. Verizon needs to update their site.

No luck tonight so far. Employee suggested coming back tomorrow - he says "the phone is ready and yours, but our system can't process it right now due to the server issue". We'll see what happens.

Why they can't do something akin to the Genius Bar replacements, I don't know.

Well no matter what you're going to have to do the credit check with citizens bank since they're starting a new loan. So if you're refinancing I'd advise against going through this process. What struck me as odd was Verizon wanting to do their own credit check when they should not have any role in the transaction.
Well that pisses me off because it's not what Apple advertised. And essentially now I'd have to go start all over (in terms of the loan/credit check). Ridiculous

Thanks! Are you still able to upgrade in September when the new iPhone comes out?
Technically the eligibility resets. But you're supposed to get a check for what you've paid into the program to date from citizens bank, and you can pay that back into the new loan so that you become eligible for the upgrade early.

Seems like an unnecessary convoluted mess to lease thru Citizens One. Why not purchase the phone outright? That way you can sell the phone whenever you want (at whatever price you determine). No regular credit check every time you want to buy a phone, not to mention cutting out the middle man (Citizens One).

Well for me, I've bought and sold for years (in the subsidy days). My husband has his iPhone also. I really don't want to drop almost 2k for phones. And selling phones nowadays isn't as easy. We sold ours last year and the market has sure changed with selling phones due to the payment plans etc!

If that is the case, consider doing through Verizon for the phone, instead of Citizen One. You can still upgrade every year (or sooner) if you want, or pay off the phone and keep it. No having to worry about when your upgrade resets as you would control that, and payments would still be interest free.

It's a no interest loan. It doesn't make sense to pay cash for it outright. The credit check is necessary any time new service (new carrier) is requested. Or, of course, if you get a new IUP loan.

The other thing I noticed with the IUP deal is when you "trade" for the new phone at 12 months, you get more for your 1 year old used phone than you would on the market. I didn't think to keep checking the market as the months rolled by, but this is one of the reason's I decided to upgrade at that time.

If one wants to get a new phone every year (or sooner) it cost more to go through Citizens One, versus the carrier interest free plan. Why pay for AppleCare (with your loan) if you are only going to keep the phone a year? The phone comes with a one year warranty.

If one wants to jump through more hoops and red tape with Citizens One, so be it. There are better ways (in my opinion) to go about getting a new phone every year than the Citizens One route.

When I read about the plans you can get through the carriers vs. Apple's IUP, the IUP came out on top. IF the carriers went back to how they used to do business, even with 2 year plans, I would probably go that route.

AppleCare is included in the price of the plan and is thus financed. After a year, you are only covering half. It's also still the best insurance plan out there.

Made the swapped, Apple is absolutely awesome to deal with... note: as others have said. activations were not going smoothly today, took WAY to long with lots of retries and patient calls to Verizon. If you are wanting to swap you might hold out a few days while they work through activation backlogs and process updates to accommodate.

That's great but I dont know what part of having to go through all this is "absolutely awesome".

Well, having to go through the process isn't absolutely awesome, and I am incredibly frustrated with how much time I wasted today to still end up with nothing. I do have to agree that the Apple employees themselves were great. They really were trying to do everything in their power and were very patient dealing with this whole mess. Hopefully tomorrow it's sorted.

It's Apple corporate that ****ed up. All IUP phones should have been the CDMA version regardless of carrier (and you really shouldn't have to give any carrier info, though I suspect that might be a Citizen's Bank requirement).

For those that have successfully swapped out an AT&T 7/7 Plus for a VZW version, had you switched service over to VZW before going to Apple Store or after swapping out phones?

I hear you. Its still a big mess and I think Apple is not sure right now how to fix it. And putting their customers to jump through 20 hoops is terrible.
I believe within time they will come up with a process to make this more streamlined and efficient for those that are stuck in your situation.
And like you said from now on they should switch to giving every US customer on their IUP system iphone 7 models that will work on every carrier in the US both CDMA and GSM.

I did, and that actually seems to be the source of my issues. I think if I had done the swap before switching, it would have been much smoother. Largely because Verizon apparently sucks for this sort of thing (every single Apple employee was complaining about how much of a main Verizon is to deal with).

I stay on the IUP simply because I like to be able to have freedom of carrier. I've been with att for years and now I'm considering moving to VZW. It's nice not to be tied to a particular carrier!

Yes I could get a VZW phone on their payment plan but id still be stuck with my original IUP loan

I am thinking that I will make the swap first then take the new phone along with my others that can be switched at the same time to Verizon. In other words, get the cdma iPhone but start it up with my att number/account and port later.

Do you think this will work?

I setup a new account at Apple. The Apple to Verizon activations seem to be the source of trouble. They will get that resolved, in the mean time long hold times to get live Verizon reps on the phone to push the activations through.

What other companies go the extra steps like this To make things right for the customer.

If you go to the Verizon payment plan and want to update each year in the same way we can with IUP, you are tied to Verizon and cannot choose another carrier. One of the downfalls of going with a carrier payment plan.

That is correct, I switched from AT&T to Verizon on Wednesday. I was told I would be credited back to my orginal form of payment within a month.

Right! I went with the IUP because I have the freedom of choosing a carrier or switching. I may need Verizon due to moving more rural and their service being better for the area. Thinking no problem because I have that freedom to switch (as Apple advertised) but clearly that's not the case. Looks like we'd face new loan, more credit checks etc. can't afford that right now since I'm in the middle of a refi and new home purchase :/. Sucks....

The guy responded that he just went in the Apple Store and they swapped it for the fully unlocked cdma version but that is all he replied with.

I asked for more details of the process but he has not responded yet. Sorry.

He responded with additional details saying that he swapped the phone but activated it with att with the plan on switching to VZW shortly. Like others, the upgrade timing was reset to one year but will be able to upgrade in September when the new iPhone comes out if he pays the loan with the refund money once it comes in.
