Apple Upgrade Program - Trading in a broken phone?

Sorry if this has already been asked...was having trouble finding any results from the search.

Question is to those also in the Apple Upgrade program...my phone screen is currently cracked. Do I need to repair that through Apple Care prior to upgrading/sending it in or can I send it in and they will just charge me the $29? Get it fixed. Usually have third party check over phone, will reject it if cracked.

Yep, have it repaired beforehand. Its just easier.
