Apple has announced that the Navigo transit card can be added to the Wallet app starting today, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to simply tap their devices to pay for rides on the metro, trains, buses, and more in the Paris, France area.

With the Navigo card in the Wallet app, a rider no longer needs to visit a ticket vending machine, or reload the card at retailers. Instead, passes can be purchased directly in the Wallet app on the iPhone, or in the Île-de-France Mobilités app.

Apple also announced that real-time transit information for the Paris area will be available in Apple Maps starting this week. This feature will allow riders to view detailed schedules, live departure and arrival times, delays, outages, and any connections required to complete a trip across multiple transit systems.

In related news, it was recently announced that the PRESTO transit card in the Toronto, Canada area will soon support the Wallet app too.

In both cities, the transit cards will support Express Mode, meaning that riders can simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a payment reader to pay for their ride, without needing to unlock or wake the device. Express Mode continues to work for up to five hours after an iPhone has run out of battery power.

Thanks, Apollo Zhao!

I live in Toronto. You can tap your debit card or credit card to to use the transportation services. This also includes the use of the Toronto Presto card.

You can also tap your debit card or credit card in London and New York City to use the transportation services in thomese cities.

I was wondering if you can tap your debit card or credit card to use the transportation services of Paris other than using the Navigo card.

so how does this work when the agents need to check yout ticket or your card during one of those impromptu controls ( very frequentin Paris subways and buses) ? You just hand them your phone ?

You tap your phone with the card open. You don’t get charged again for an inspection tap.

Same applies on other systems when you pay via debit card.

Good to see it expand. Waiting to see this feature expand to other countries too

I'm in France right now and I don't see it as an option to add in the transit passes. Maybe it'll appear later today for me or something. No outstanding system updates.

EDIT: whoops, I guess I didn't have the prompt for 17.5.1 yet. downloading now.

This is true, however, adding presto card support will enable those who use other types of pass (ie: MetroPass and weekend passes) to take advantage of tap to pay in addition to "cash fare".

The same device that you used to tap onto the transit system must be used for fare inspection, otherwise it will charge a new fare.

I haven't used my Presto pass in Ottawa since they added the Apple Pay method and it only costs 5 cents difference in price. I may switch to the Presto pass for the express mode which is handy but not sure if it drains the battery?

"Inspection tap" - is that if Metro staff check to see if you're legally riding?

I just tested the new Paris Metro card. It works fine.
One weird behavior, you can't share the same card on both iPhone and Apple Watch. You can transfer the card (and attached credit) from one device to the other, you can also have two independent cards if you prefer (one for each device) but the credit is not shared

edit: already noticed by @Evan Davis

Can you tap your debit card or credit card in the Paris Metro?

Just came back from Paris and only disappointment with the card is that 2 of us were travelling together and was hoping I could use the app more than once so purchased multiple tickets. Unfortunately it could only be used for one entry so ended up with more tickets on the card than I needed and still needed to get a physical card for 2nd traveller.
It seems different systems in France have different rules. In Marseilles for example one card with multiple tickets could be tapped multiple times once for each passenger.
